Overall Satisfaction with GitLab

GitLab was brought in to be the enterprise source code management platform for our company. It allowed us to consolidate multiple SCM systems and allowed us to take advantage of code pipelines, integrate with code scanning tools, and allow us to better implement coding standards across our enterprise. This also allowed us to share these across platforms and technologies within our organization.
  • Quick build-out of code repositories.
  • Ability to quickly integrate 3rd party tools.
  • Easy to train and bring team members up to leverage the tool.
  • Need to have all 3rd party components properly scanned for cyber-related issues.
  • Need to have the expertise to build out workflows and code pipelines.
  • Pay attention to understanding licensing costs based upon your team size and needs.
  • Savings on consolidation to one SCM environment.
  • Need to budget time for change and ramp-up of staff.
  • Great support from GitLab Team.
Gitlab offered more capabilities and the ability to integrate with partners. Though Aldon was tried and true, the move to Digital and Cloud-based components was better for Azure and AWS with GitLab. Our team looked at several source code management systems but based on recommendations from team experience and other 3rd parties it made the most sense.
We have used the security features of GitLab, as well as added several third-party components to provide full coverage as needed to support our workflows and cyber security requirements. It provides the necessary reporting, and will not allow team members to commit code if there are any security issues or non-supported open source components allowed.
We use a Jenkins pipeline for our code releases which has allowed our team to begin sharing components across the enterprise.

Do you think GitLab delivers good value for the price?

Yes

Are you happy with GitLab's feature set?

Yes

Did GitLab live up to sales and marketing promises?

I wasn't involved with the selection/purchase process

Did implementation of GitLab go as expected?

Yes

Would you buy GitLab again?

Yes

Need to make certain that you understand where you are and your overall goals. Definitely start small with a team and prove out the workflows and integrated components. Work through team by team to set up the GitLab Tool. Due to the need to manage the repository, I suggest having an admin with GitLab Expertise oversee and run the repository.
