Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We use it to store and access data in the cloud. This includes bucket based storage in GCS buckets, but also queried data from BigQuery in the cloud. This enables easy sharing of data across projects. Additionally we use Google Cloud Platform for tracking logs of jobs running and executing in the cloud to debug failed runs.

Handles Permissions for Logging In
Makes querying BigQuery easy
Enables access and management of buckets

Cons

The Logs Explorer is quite hard to dig into and find logs of interest
BigQuery transparency for BigLake vs External tables isn't the best
Google Group management for permissions can get hairy.

It has made it easy to integrate with our artifact repository

Usability

The Google Cloud Platform console is pretty slick for BigQuery especially. I have liked the visibility I get from using that and the way to integrate and see what's in our data lake. The logging console for tracking GKE jobs isn't quite as great, which is why it doesn't get a full 10.

Alternatives Considered

Amazon S3 (Simple Storage Service) and Snowflake

I feel GCS buckets are pretty interchangeable with Amazon S3 as far as I have typically used them. It just depends on who or your company wants to give money to. I have liked the Google Cloud Platform BigQuery console better than the interface for Snowflake, but that may be due to familiarity and the proportion of time I've used Google Cloud Platform over Snowflake.

Likelihood to Recommend

When most of our stuff is in Google Cloud Platform, it works great to integrate and cross/share data that is all in Google Cloud Platform or BigQuery. It has simplified things from a permissions perspective as well. I'd say it is less appropriate when trying to test something quickly locally, or when half your stuff is in AWS or another provider.
