Overall Satisfaction with IBM Apptio
Problem statement: we did not have visibility and neither transparency on what the IT infrastructure cost and how the business units are consuming it. At the same time, when running a profitability analysis, it was not possible to determine the IT costs attached to each and every product. By using Apptio and the ATUM model, we are now able to allocate all IT costs to products and, consequently, to Business Units. We can also create cost reports and share them with the business units and product owners, fostering collaboration with them and increasing understanding, visibility, and transparency on how IT costs are generated and allocated. Thanks to this, we can obtain insights to better use and handle our IT infrastructure as well as how to seize it according to business metrics and changes.
Pros
- Data ingestion.
- Data allocation.
- Data aggregation.
- The connection between objects and different levels of the cost model.
Cons
- Reporting.
- Check out datasets.
- Calculating times.
- Product TCO.
- Application TCO.
- IT cost allocated by BU.
Reporting is key. It helps to visualize the current status as well as the evolution of the IT cost throughout time. IT Towers' perspective helps understand the cost drivers of a given product. Data ingestion helps to automate the data loads on a monthly basis. Cost allocation helps improve cost accuracy. We are currently exploring the possibility of integrating a forecast model as well in the system.

I am generally satisfied with how we use the Apptio package in the company, although we do not use its full potential. Having cost transparency and budget in the same instance, it is very beneficial to compare budget and actuals and run deviation analysis at the application, product, or business unit levels. Benchmarking functionality also helps you compare your cost structure to that of other companies in the industry.
