Overall Satisfaction with IBM Apptio

Apptio Planning is used at my organization for forecast and planning for our IT Products. This is also used for tracking IT expenses for our 3 lines of business. We have started work on Product TCO and continue to enhance Application TCO Reporting.

Pros

  • Community of Practice is a valuable forum for new and experienced users
  • Ability to pull in numerous data sources and ability to tag, customize
  • Reporting and Dashboard creation

Cons

  • Datalink has been a limitation for my organization when integrating with other applications like Snowflake or ERP
  • Ability to schedule change moves from Dev to Stage, in some instances we have users that are able to access our Stage environment and having changes visible before ready becomes a change mgmt challenge.
My rating is based on the insights my team along with our finance partners have been able to gather and share in our latest implementation January 2025.
  • We have improved our forecast cycle time from almost 4 weeks to an estimated total of 5 days
  • Introduced a continuous forecast process for our finance analyst which in turn eliminated the need for multiple spreadsheets.
  • Continued enhancements in IT Planning by integrating external source data that our finance teams rely on for their forecast and planning activities.
In our journey we are currently focused on educating our IT Leaders, and Business Stakeholders by sharing unit cost reporting based on consumption data. This has been extremely challenging since there is a learning curve. As we work on Infrastructure Benchmarking now we believe there will be new conversations about our strategic goals.
Overall my experience with customer support has been acceptable. I can't say it's been great or amazing because at times my team has experienced delayed response time and in some instances we have to prompt our relationship partners from Apptio to step in and help get our issues resolved. We have seen some improvements like in our last Cloud migration but still room for improvement.

Apptio has been a nice fit in my organization because it has brought to light mapping gaps and potential sunset opportunities from an infrastructure perspective.
