I've used local hosting solutions (company not listed above) as well has maintained our own hardware in the past. Linode far surpasses these solutions in every respect - cost, maintenance, uptime.
We probably spend about 1 hour total monthly directly maintaining our Linode stack of anywhere between 10-20 servers. Given that we charge our clients set monthly rates for hosting as a part of our service directly, we can be flexible to client needs without baring direct costs or needing to adjust our own pricing. This is a tremendous advantage in managing client needs day to day in our industry.
It is one of the most important factors of using a third party solution.
As a small vendor, there is simply no way we can offer the expected uptimes without a more robust partner, let alone manage backups, DDOS events, or maintenance downtime/power outages etc. at our volumes without a significant increase to our costs. Linode allows us to offer a level of service far out of proportion to our company size.
