Overall Satisfaction with Microsoft Azure IoT Edge

I used Microsoft Azure IoT Edge in the past to connect our devices in the factory floor to Azure IoT service. Microsoft Azure IoT Edge has the functionality to support certain protocols, like in our case, it was OPC-UA where we get the data from PLCs and push it towards Azure IoT Services in the cloud in a secure way.

Pros

  • IoT Connectivity: IoT edge can store and forward messages / telemetry data really well to the IoT Hub.
  • Containerized architecture: It lets you deploy AI/ML Models on edge
  • The data is cached in Microsoft Azure IoT Edge in case of connection issues

Cons

  • For some reason, the containerized architecture was also making this very hard
  • Had some issues when debugging edge modules, needs a professional grade remote debugging
  • Industrial automation still requires attention. OPC-UA was good but Modbus or custom PLCs etc was painful to set up
  • I wasn't involved fully on the commmercial side, but as far as I understand, it was much cheaper than other options e.g. SAP IoT etc.
  • We've got support from MS during Piloting phase
  • During go-live the support was a bit thinner than piloting...
Most of the time it works perfectly, does not require any attention, but when there is a problem, it's really hard to diagnose it. I think the documentation for the positive scenarios are good on the Microsoft side, but for negative scenarios, I don't think there is enough community help out there, in my opinion.
SAP IoT is more useful when you use SAP as your ERP and try to to add a business context and merge the scenarios, Cumulocity IoT has nice analytical capabilities, digital twin features, also has good connectivity options but when it comes to edge functionalities I think Microsoft Azure IoT Edge is the best one. Of course it's also possible to combine these to get the best experience but it will be costly for sure.

Do you think Microsoft Azure IoT Edge delivers good value for the price?

Yes

Are you happy with Microsoft Azure IoT Edge's feature set?

Yes

Did Microsoft Azure IoT Edge live up to sales and marketing promises?

I wasn't involved with the selection/purchase process

Did implementation of Microsoft Azure IoT Edge go as expected?

Yes

Would you buy Microsoft Azure IoT Edge again?

Yes

On ML side, where you need e.g. QC with Camera, it was very easy to setup Microsoft Azure IoT Edge to stream video from camera, deploy Custom Vision models (e.g. YOLO) and make sure only certain events with metadata are sent back to Azure. This was one of the tasks where Microsoft Azure IoT Edge excelled in my opinion.
