Overall Satisfaction with Red Hat Satellite

We have several servers that require we stagger patching schedules as well as hold packages back and test. All this has to be done with no direct internet connection. Red Hat Satellite allows us this flexibility and more. It's truly been a wonderful thing for our environment.

Pros

  • Patch Staging
  • Customized Software Repositories
  • Version Control of Repositories

Cons

  • I woud love for it to provide the same functionality for non-RHEL OS's
  • Containerized Installation
  • Simplified workflow setup
  • We have been able to automate the update process to not require after-hours monitoring.
  • Centralizing updates has greatly reduced the overall time servers are down and processing their individual updates.
  • We are able to bring our own RPM packages in and stage them in the same deployment model as official Red Hat packages.
I do feel the overall workflow to setup updates is initally quite cumbersome and requires several steps to get going. I would like to see this process improved. From manually bringing in subscriptions to having to manually enable repositories in multiple places it is just frustrating at times. Thankfully, this is only on setup.

Do you think Red Hat Satellite delivers good value for the price?

Yes

Are you happy with Red Hat Satellite's feature set?

Yes

Did Red Hat Satellite live up to sales and marketing promises?

Yes

Did implementation of Red Hat Satellite go as expected?

Yes

Would you buy Red Hat Satellite again?

Yes

Red Hat Satellite works amazingly with servers that need more control over their packages. For one or two servers that you're just doing "dnf update" Red Hat Satellite is way overkill.
