Overall Satisfaction with SolarWinds Network Configuration Manager (NCM)

All of our network switches and routers are set up in NCM. It provides a backup of all of our configurations. It allows us to quickly restore a change made, compare changed to configuration files backed up each day and most importantly, if a switch dies we can very easily and quickly restore that switch to get operations back.
  • Make a backup of configuration changes that can be restored to a working switch
  • compare changes to configuration changed over a 30-day period
  • Roll back changes made that have created negative results
  • It will detect changes such certificate keys. These aren't necessarily changes made to the switch but do change each day
  • If multiple changes are made before the next scheduled backup, restoring those changes affect all changes made - not just the individual change you are looking to roll back.
  • When a switch fails and must be replaced, you can quickly get a spare, get it on the network then have NCM push the configuration
  • If a change to a switch is made with negative results, anyone with access to NCM can roll that configuration back. You don't necessarily need to know who made this change or exactly what the change was.
In most cases, unless you are making constant changes to a switch, NCM sits in the background and does its thing. But when a switch goes down because of a hardware failure and it must be replaced, every second counts to get a working switch in it's place. NCM lets us get a switch back to the exact configuration that the failed switch had.
