Overall Satisfaction with SQL Sentry Performance Advisor

Our DBA team uses SQL Sentry to monitor and troubleshoot all of our production SQL Server instances. This includes alerting on long running queries, when performance thresholds are met and exceeded, and the monitoring of SQL Agent Jobs.

Pros

  • Monitoring.
  • Troubleshooting.
  • Alerting.

Cons

  • Windows Monitoring.
  • Allowing non-power users to utilize the tool for query analysis, without having the ability to kill queries.
  • Alerting configuration.
Disk space alerting. We are forced to leverage SCOM, which is clunky at best. If SQL Sentry could provide us with those types of alerting and monitoring it would satisfy all of our SQL Server needs.

Hello David, Thank you for taking the time to rate SQL Sentry. We are glad that you have successfully pinpointed performance issues using our tools! Currently, a user who has permission to access the SQL Sentry database, and therefore use the SQL Sentry client, should be able to view plans that have been collected, as well as open any execution plans that have been saved through the integrated Plan Explorer. However, to execute a query or to get an actual plan, the integrated credentials of the logged in user must have the appropriate permissions on a target server to do so. If I am misunderstanding your statement, and you would like to discuss this, please feel free to contact our Support team (support@sqlsentry.com). Thanks to the custom conditions included with Performance Advisor, we are able to provide alerting for nearly any situation. In addition, through our hierarchy structure, condition filters, and rulesets, it is possible to tune alerting at various levels, include and exclude specific events, and adjust the frequency with which you are alerted. If you have questions or issues tuning alerts, please don’t hesitate to contact our Support team. Thank you for your valuable input and for being a member of the SQL Sentry family!
