Spotfire Platform

Overall Satisfaction with Spotfire

Spotfire is being used across the whole organization for various applications. Overall, it integrates multiple sources of data to be able to spend more time analyzing rather than data manipulation. For me, I merge well, completions, reservoir, and geological data together to find trends and correlations that contribute to well performance, determine top operators, and potential areas for acquisition.

Pros

  • Absorbs vast amounts of live & static data.
  • Customized dashboards.
  • Quick results.

Cons

  • Some visualizations are a little clunky.
  • Could use some refinement in the UI.
  • Would like to see more customizable plots/charts.
  • Not being able to align gridlines with multiple scales
  • My work is done quicker, saves time.
  • Better detail in my analysis, better understanding, reduce error.
  • More efficient at finding "dead ends" in my analysis, better focus.
We also use TIBCO Data Virtualization, which gives us live links to our data.
We had Spotfire when I joined the company

Do you think Spotfire delivers good value for the price?

Yes

Are you happy with Spotfire's feature set?

Yes

Did Spotfire live up to sales and marketing promises?

Yes

Did implementation of Spotfire go as expected?

I wasn't involved with the implementation phase

Would you buy Spotfire again?

Yes

Microsoft 365 (formerly Office 365), Zoom, Drillinginfo DI Analytics
In my work, the ability to combine engineering, geology, and economics into one platform is powerful. In my role in A&D, I use existing dashboards that I've created to quickly get up to speed in a new basin or play as I can quickly look at where the best wells are, the best operators, and also why (completions, economies of scale, concentrated land base, own facilities, etc.). If I were to do this the "old" way, it would take weeks rather than hours or days.

TIBCO Cloud Capabilities

The cloud services have allowed me to use Spotfire from anywhere and access the associated data from anywhere.
This was a new deployment for us and the transition went smoothly. I just had to work on moving data sets over.
Yes we have been able to migrate existing applications to the cloud. Once again, accessibility was the main driver for this, which has been achieved.
So far, it has met my organization's needs.
  • Accessibility
  • Speed
  • Data in one spot
No, I've never used their support before.
The times where I've provided feedback, they have usually mentioned that I was not the first to make a request for a specific feature. Usually those features are already in development and I see them in 6-12 months.
  • Maps of cumulative or forecasted production by section
  • Maps of well activity by section or DSU
  • Extremely fast operator analysis (production, activity, technology, etc.)

Using Spotfire

12 - Finance/accounting, engineering, land, and business development
1 - Officially, we have one main person who is our expert, but there are other strong users who I've used for support.
  • Evaluation of a company's well activity
  • Analysis of what makes a specific oil and gas play work (ie. drilling and completions analysis)
  • Understand our company's net production from our vast mineral acreage
  • Integration with our finance cube
  • Integration with our land records
  • Forecasting of oil and gas production within Spotfire instead of another software package
I haven't used it enough to fully evaluate it, but the few times I have, it has given me some recommendations I've never considered.
Overall, the data wrangling capabilities are really good. Whether it be custom expressions or various filtering options, I can get what I need quickly.
I've recently used some R scripts within Spotfire and they work great! However, I've also encountered mysterious error messages that won't go away...
Geographic visualizations are usually on my first page to show the location and size of various assets that I look at. It also helps me to know where to go next, once I get a geographical lay of the land.

Evaluating Spotfire and Competitors

I was not involved in the selection process.
I was not involved in the selection process, but I would stick with Spotfire if I was.

Spotfire Implementation

I was not part of the implementation.
  • I was not part of the implementation.

Spotfire Training

  • In-Person Training
I never took the formal training that was offered in our company, as it happened the month before I joined. However, I learned from colleagues and through various web searches/resources. There are a lot of resources out there (Dr. Spotfire, Spotfire Community, etc.) that I use similar to how I figured out advanced functions in Excel. Through this, I became one of the power users within the company.

Spotfire Support

No
There are enough online resources to find what we're looking for.
I have found Dr. Spotfire very helpful, as Neil's videos and articles lay out solutions very well. I've enjoyed them so much that I've let others know about them.

Using Spotfire

ProsCons
Like to use
Easy to use
Well integrated
Consistent
Convenient
Feel confident using
None
  • Bringing in information links
  • Custom expressions
  • Creating map charts with shape files
  • Changing axes for a bunch of plots (things seem to reset)
  • Making my dashboards look nice
  • Initial set up of multiple plots
I haven't received any formal training on Spotfire, but have become a "power user" in my company. There are enough online resources to get up to speed with the software, and it has proven to be very versatile in different use cases.
