ULS The easiest way to teach in Special Education
Overall Satisfaction with Unique Learning System
We use ULS as our core curriculum to service our self-contained students in a classroom designed to support the success of our students with autism. Our program uses ULS to address all curriculum needs.
Pros
- Differentiating for different level learners
- Accessible and usable lesson plans
- Scaffolded learning across subjects
Cons
- I REALLY miss the old planner.
- The length of assignments is automatically 1 day. I wish there was a way to change the due date for every lesson I assign for the day all at once.
- I want a button that brings me back to the unit, instead of just back one page.
- I literally could not do my job in the hours I have if it weren't for ULS. The Unit structure helps me know what is coming because each unit follows the same learning map/calendar.
- Using benchmark testing data simplifies my job and allows for cut and paste data points for quarterly reporting.
- Showing parents the pre and posttest unit test allows for visual representation of growth and development.
- Benchmarking students helps me quickly find an appropriate starting point when I get new students and need to develop IEP goals.
Without a doubt, I never want to have to go back to assembling my own materials and creating my own lesson plans. The way ULS operates is exactly as it should be. I am able to assess students at the beginning of the year, choose a differentiation level, and BOOM! We are on a roll! Students are assigned lessons that my paraprofessionals assist with after our group lessons and provide feedback on where the students are retaining what they learned and what may need to be delivered again for instruction. The lessons are so easy to use and follow, I just use the prompts given and students are engaged and growing every day!
I have a student who refused to engage in academics. They would sit away from the group, but I always noticed them watching when they thought I wasn't watching them. The student was always afraid of making mistakes, so refusal was their favorite option. I started laminating the communication boards and leaving them near where he would sit and watch. As time has gone on, the student sits with group, is willing to take chances (the errorless options for lessons have been HUGE wins for him!) and enjoys being a part of the lessons.
I have used STAR curriculum before this. It was pretty great as well, I still have access to it, however, I no longer use it because it seems too far below the level of my students.
