Unique Learning System Review
Overall Satisfaction with Unique Learning System
I teach students with disabilities. My students rely on the software for their daily curriculum. The product is good, but when you have higher functioning students who may be able to handle some on-level or close to on-level material, N2Y doesn't support them. The product needs to be more challenging for higher-functioning students. Also, there is not enough material to cover for a unit's worth of work. Often, the unit has to be extended using external materials.
Pros
- Easy access.
- The reading levels can be adjusted.
- Math problems are broken down for understanding using simple language.
- Assessments are already premade.
Cons
- More challenging work needs to be uploaded.
- There are 5th grade benchmarks but no work to support the benchmarks.
- Benchmarks need to be isolated per grade/function level. There are too many to choose from.
- Maybe a pre-made benchmark test design to meet grade level skill base.
- Kids are bored after a while using N2Y. They are interested in programs like iReady or IXL instead because of more challenging materials and more engagement.
- N2y is easy to log on to.
- The Units are great but need to be supplements to extend units for 6 weeks.
- N2y is a good supplement, but not a solo use program to meet students' graduation requirements.
- Charts and data are great, but not easy to access, plus the charts don't break down grade-level skills that may be required.
We are given a schedule from the district of when the Unit is to be on throughout the year. N2Y can explain what each unit will be about to assign, which is great for knowing which supplemental materials to gather to enhance the unit.
For my lower-function students, N2Y is very accessible, but for the higher-function students, it's too easy. I have used N2Y to set up a sub-group in my class. Also, I have assigned homework in N2Y, which gives parents an opportunity to see what students are learning and what material is being used to support their students.
N2Y does not match these programs. The listed programs have more engaging, age-appropriate activities for middle and high school students. N2Y does not keep students engaged or wanting to log in. I have had to struggle to get my students to work in N2Y. They have also figured out how to bypass the assignments by clicking the turn-in button to get a green button on turned-in assignments.
