Overall Satisfaction with Unique Learning System

I am a special education teacher, so I utilize Unique Learning System for curriculum throughout my day. Mostly using the monthly unit lessons for ELA and math. Also, I use News2You and L3 skills.

Pros

  • For the most part, I like the assessments and the feedback they give about the student's skills. They were particularly helpful for curriculum development, as well as for writing IEP's.
  • The games in L3 skills encompass a lot of skills, and most of my students can independently stay engaged with the games.

Cons

  • Some concepts are hardly differentiated, so students are unable to use them appropriately if they don't fall into a specific range of skills. I've noticed this most with math skills, especially money and telling time.
  • When you skip a question on an assessment you are unable to go back to edit your answer. This frequently causes issues when students try to skip through a test, or if the "next question" button is accidently hit more than once.
  • Sometimes assignments can feel clunky. Answers will be selected by students but not by the program, and will require refreshing, toggling the full screen of the page, and zooming in and out in order for the program to select answers chosen by students.
  • Time saved on lesson planning
  • Assessments help with development of curriculum
  • Ease of developing PLEP's for IEP's
When I started teaching much of my time was spent scouring the internet for various resources. Unique Learning System has helped to consolidate most of my planning to one resource. Some resources have become staples of our classroom curriculum every day, such as unit lessons in math the leveled books for ELA.
Unique Learning System has greatly helped me with my IEP writing this year. The assessments are a great way to test what skills students have and what skills they still need to develop. I also really appreciate the "blurb" that says what specific skills a student can do and with what efficiency after they complete a given assessment.
Once you know where to find things on Unique Learning System, it is a good resource for developing curriculum. There are some good resources across all content areas, even cooking and life skills. I do wish the program functioned better on the students iPads, perhaps even having its own app. I also wish there was a way to push out assignments for specific times of the day. Right now, the only options are to push assignment out "before 12" or "after 12"
I actually have not used any products similar to Unique Learning System. I have been a teacher for 5 years now. My first year teaching, I began with Unique Learning System as my main curriculum source. Therefore, I am unable to accurately compare Unique Learning System with any other products at this time.

Do you think Unique Learning System delivers good value for the price?

Not sure

Are you happy with Unique Learning System's feature set?

Yes

Did Unique Learning System live up to sales and marketing promises?

I wasn't involved with the selection/purchase process

Did implementation of Unique Learning System go as expected?

Yes

Would you buy Unique Learning System again?

Yes

It is appropriate with life skills students. It feels most appropriate for students with skills roughly in the 1st-5th grade range. Students with higher or lower skills often do not have appropriate assignments on Unique Learning System. The assignments seem to be more appropriate to develop students with skills in this range.

Using Unique Learning System

20 - Most of the people in my organization using Unique Learning System are special education teachers. Their business function is educating students. The majority of our other users are related service providers, such as physical therapists and occupational therapists. They utilize it to help students carry over with their skills in the therapy setting.
1 - The type of person or skills that is required to support Unique Learning System is willing to get hands on and utilize the different aspects of Unique Learning System themselves. This way they can physically show teachers and other users of Unique Learning System how best to implement its various resources.
  • Teaching Students
  • Assessing Students
  • Engaging Students
  • Recipes
  • Science Experiments
  • Current Events
  • Regulation Skills
  • Aid in collaboration
  • Assessments
I appreciate all the various resources that Unique Learning System has to offer. However, due to my limited interaction with other resources similar to Unique Learning System I do not know enough to compare it against other programs. I also am not a person in charge of renewing Unique Learning System for my organization.
