Pros and Cons

Provides accurate sales tax rates for online sale transactions.
Tax categories and product codes.
Data updates are always in a timely manner.

Data extracts could provide more options to select for running reports.
VOS Retail Report would be better if you could customize only the data your company needed.
The ability to access the EDI sent for certain states.

Return on Investment

Based on the amount of work Vertex performs for us monthly, the ROI is definite.
In terms of compliance, the ROI is definitely worth the cost.

Vertex has definitely invested a lot in the past couple of years in improving its tax calculations for high-volume and/or complex transactions. Also, allowing personalization with writing rules and/or scenarios to accommodate certain states/cities or products that contain more complex rules. And considering all the thousands of jurisdictions in the US, that says a lot for Vertex.

I have found for local sales tax audits in states where you do not have any physical presence; the audit data is very precise and easy to review and tie back to returns. As a result, audits are not too time-consuming and audit assessments have been minimal or zero.
