What is WordPress?

Wordpress is an open-source publishing platform popular with bloggers and a content management system. The appearance of a Wordpress site and many of its functions are managed through themes, and further customizable through altering code, though altering code is not required; templates and plugins to expand its capabilities are plentiful. Wordpress features integrated link management, and a search-engine friendly permalink structure. WordPress now allows multiple blogs to exist within one installation. Websites may host their own blogging communities, controlling and moderating content from a single dashboard.

Wordpress is popular due to its simplicity and modifiability. Furthermore implementing Wordpress costs only time. Two paid versions exist. The $99 premium plan allows a user an ad free custom domain with 13GB of space and advanced customization. The $299 Business plan allows unlimited space and supports eCommerce as well.

  • The dashboard makes it easy to see when there are things that need attention (updates, content moderation, etc.)
  • It is very easy to setup and maneuver.
  • It is frequently updated for security, usability.
  • It is so widely used that you can basically search for any information you need to learn and find many good and relevant answers.

  • Adding and formatting content pages is easy, with no need to learn to code. WordPress automatically creates the necessary HTML, while the user can format content using bold, italic, etc.
  • A recent update let users upload and edit images to ensure the sizing is right. This is a welcome addition to the functionality in WordPress.
  • WordPress makes it easy to add internal links with a drop down menu in the edit window.

  • Managing content is particularly easy using the WYSIWYG functionality and general framework.
  • Installing certain functionality by installing plugins with an easy interface system that is just uploading the plugin, installing it, and activating it.
  • Connecting with customers is easy to do with the proper functionality put into your site by the use of plugins, and now, sometimes a functionality that a theme may provide.

  • The menu feature is really great - allows rebuilding and adding of menus on the fly.
  • Web page changes are simple, effective unless the pages call a PHP file from the server. For that I have to get an IT resource involved.
  • Built in CSS informs page layout, coloration, font structure etc. This is a plus, it's also a minus if you want to change any of the style sheet elements.

  • Probably the easiest thing would be writing posts and pages using the WordPress visual editor. It's similar to writing a Word Doc.
  • Now that plugins can be uploaded directly using the dashboard, rather than FTP, makes this a very easy process.
  • Although some web people may disagree, I'm happy that WordPress updates are taking place in the background automatically at least for minor changes.

  • Adding and editing page content - if you can use MS Word, you can add and edit your content in WordPress. Both editing pages and blog posts have the same editing screens.
  • Adding a blog. If a WordPress site hasn't got a blog page, it's easy to implement, in just a few clicks.
  • Adding images to the pages and posts, it's just like inserting an image into an email or MS Word comment.
  • Plugins for additional functionality. As long as you read the reviews and make sure you're getting a good one, they are dead easy to implement. You may need the instructions for setting up some and others are obvious.
