Amazon AWS
If your organization has a lot of archival data that it needs to be backed up for safekeeping, where it won't be touched except in a dire emergency, Amazon Glacier is perfect. In our case, we had a client that generates many TB of video and photo data at annual events and wanted to retain ALL of it, pre- and post- edit for potential use in a future museum. Using the Snowball device, we were able to move hundreds of TB of existing media data that was previously housed on multiple Thunderbolt drives, external RAIDs, etc, in an organized manner, to Amazon Glacier. Then, we were able to setup CloudBerry Backup on their production computers to continually backup any new media that they generated during their annual events.

Scality
The team in charge of implementing Scality has to be full stack in order to guarantee the correct functioning of the entire system. However, you have to think very carefully about the balance between servers and disks, perhaps adopting smaller fully populated servers instead of large semi-populated servers, which would mean that over time our disk updates will not have a fully useful life.

Cons
Amazon AWS
  • Sometime due to slow drives there are operation failure noticed by us in testing
  • Cost of restoring data is high and if you have regular restoring them it is not good option and slow as well.
  • While we were setting up the system we took some support from AWS and in many cases their answers were not up to the mark.

  • As we are still piloting the product at our company at this time the feedback is highly limited.

  • The overall packaging is not very good. I think it could be more efficient for installation.
  • There are many components in storage servers. This can generally be complex to understand, you have to be patient.

Usability
Amazon AWS
It is difficult to delete the data as you have to wait for inventory and then bucket modification has to expire.

Scality
As an organization, it took us a while to understand the shift from a traditional black box SAN to software-defined storage, but now we are much more certain of what this means. The time invested and the resources were not very high, thanks on the one hand to the technical support and on the other to the coherence and good development of the platform.

Alternatives Considered
Amazon AWS
Since the rest of our infrastructure is in Amazon AWS, coding for sending data to Glacier just makes sense. The others are great as well, for their specific needs and uses, but having *another* third-party software to manage, be billed for, and learn/utilize can be costly in money and time.

[The] customer support is quite good. Cost also has another point to add, along with process integration and ease of using new tool.

Scality
Due to the nature of our business we require extensive encryption and availability for sensitive customer data. The erasure encoding that Scality provides gives us the assurance that documents are rest are never in a state of being downloaded or available to a casual data thief. This is something that can be found with other vendors but at a fraction of the same cost. Having this kind of performance, availability and redundancy at the cost that Scality provides has made a large difference to our organization.

Return on Investment
Amazon AWS
  • We seldom need to access our data in Glacier; this means that it is a fraction of the cost of S3, including the infrequent-access storage class.
  • Transitioning data to Glacier is managed by AWS. We don't need our engineers to build or maintain log pipelines.
  • Configuring lifecycle policies for S3 and Glacier is simple; it takes our engineers very little time, and there is little risk of errant configuration.

Scality
  • Keeping sensitive customer data secure is a must for our organization and Scality has great features to make this happen.
  • We replaced a single SAN with a Scality ring and found performance to improve as we store more and more customer data.
  • Being able to lose various portions of our Scality ring and allow it to continue to service customers while maintaining high performance has been key to our business.
