Apache Cordova

It is suitable for making portable applications, with almost the same code for several platforms. You can access native features of the device or use an open source plug-in from the repository to create a local database and access the internal storage of the device. It is wonderful for the construction of a native application, through the use of standard web code. It is not recommended for enterprise applications.

Visual Studio IDE

Visual Studio is well suited when you want to build web applications or window applications in C# using the .NET framework. You can build a full-stack application with razor engine frontend, backend in the .NET framework. Easy to connect to databases like SQL and interact with them. A lot of debugging options available to easily find where your code is lacking or throwing issues. It is less appropriate when you want to build software using the latest technology and languages like React, Nodejs, etc. The free community version of it only provides limited testing options.

Pros

Apache Cordova

  • Cordova makes it very easy to develop apps for multiple platforms. The setup is very simple when it comes to creating a project, adding platforms, building and deploying apps. If you have a little mobile app development experience, all you need to know is HTML, CSS, Javascript and only a handful of cordova commands to get started with your hybrid app.
  • Cordova provides a simple solution to access any and all of the device features through native plugins. You have a host of third-party and cordova plugins available to use device features like filesystem, camera, health kit, location services etc. You can also write your very own plugins and use them for your cordova based apps.
  • Cordova is free to use! The only cost you will bear is the individual mobile platform developer program enrollment cost to deploy your apps to those platforms.

Visual Studio IDE

  • Since Microsoft offers a free Community Edition of the IDE many of our new developers have used it at home or school and are very familiar with the user interface, requiring little training to move up to the paid, enterprise-friendly editions we use.
  • The online community support for Visual Studio is outstanding, as solid or better than any other commercial or open-source project software.
  • Microsoft continuously keeps the product up to date and has maintained a history of doing so. They use it internally for their own development so there is little chance it will ever fall out of favor and become unsupported.

Cons

Apache Cordova

  • Needs to be fully compatible with mobile machines
  • Support for a wide variety of platforms
  • Needs better backwards compatibility

Visual Studio IDE

  • Certain settings and features can sometimes be challenging to locate. The interface isn't always intuitive.
  • Sometimes there are too many ways to do the same thing. For example, users can quickly add a new workspace in Source Control Explorer when a local path shows as "Not Mapped," but it doesn't indicate that the user might want to check the dropdown list of workspaces. The shortcut of creating a new workspace by clicking on the "Not Mapped" link can lead to developers creating too many workspaces and causing workspace management to become unwieldy. If the shortcut link were removed, the user would be forced to use the Workspace dropdown. While it can add an extra step to the process, workspaces would be managed more easily, and this would enforce consistency. At the very least, there should be a high-level administrative setting to hide the shortcut link.

VS is the best and is required for building Microsoft applications. The quality and usefulness of the product far out-weight the licensing costs associated with it.

The thing I like the most is Visual Studio doesn't suffer from Microsoft's over eager marketing department who feel they need to redesign the UI (think Office and windows) which forces users to loose large amounts of productivity having to learn software that they had previously known.

Between online forums like StackOverflow, online documentation, MSDN forums, and the customer support options, I find it very easy to get support for Visual Studio IDE when I need it. If desired, one can also download the MSDN documentation about the IDE and have it readily available for any support needs.

Alternatives Considered

Apache Cordova

Apache Cordova is the mother of all other frameworks. The Ionic developed framework is well suited for development but most of their features are offered by paid services. As Apache Cordova is open source and has a license to modify it, it has no legal problems to work with it. Also, most well-known IDEs recognize the Apache Cordova snippets.

Visual Studio IDE

While Visual Studio Code makes up for some of its shortcomings by being an IDE for just about any language you want to develop in, having a designer for WPF or Windows Forms saves a ton of time. However, Code provides better intellisense for CSS when you use SAAS (SCSS).
We use WebStorm by JetBrains for all of our HTML/CSS/JavaScript/TypeScript work. If it's web, we use WebStorm.
Another product we've been using is Rider by JetBrains. It's also a full fledged IDE for anything .Net Framework. Our developers that prefer to use Linux as their daily desktop use Rider with .Net Core since they are all web developers, this works well. Rider has better web support than Visual Studio and if you set it up the same as WebStorm it offers the same functionality as WebStorm.

Return on Investment

Apache Cordova

  • It has a positive impact in general. Cordova is really a great solution for web developers who want to bring their incredible ideas to devices, but they just do not have a lot of time to put into iOS and Android learning curves.
  • Our biggest benefit was that the management of images for multiple devices.
  • Developing with Cordova has drastically reduced the cost of cross-platform deployment.

Visual Studio IDE

  • Since we're currently using the community edition, there was no expense to implement Visual Studio which meant an instant ROI.
  • Because of the capabilities Visual Studio has to track large projects we've benefited from improved productivity using this IDE. We don't have to use multiple tools to build out a project.
  • I don't consider it a negative, but to use a tool like Visual Studio you have to invest the money in buying hardware that's fast enough to run the IDE. That probably goes without saying.
