AWS Fargate vs. DigitalOcean Droplets

Fargate is well suited for web APIs, microservices, background jobs, and applications with changing traffic. It is useful when teams want to run containers without managing servers. It is less appropriate for workloads that run constantly at large scale, need special hardware, require deep server control, or depend on very low costs and highly customized networking or storage requirements.

DigitalOcean Droplets are the best choice for developers teams that need reliable Linux servers to deploy their projects, the ability to create a droplet for testing purposes then destroy it, and only get charged for the few hours used makes the chances of messing up very slim. DigitalOcean Droplets is a great solution because the servers are scalable and the process of adding more resources like CPU or RAM to an existing droplet takes only a few minutes and once a server is scaled up it can also be scaled down if necessary which is perfect for supporting a temporary peak in traffic for example.

• Simplicity to scale services--the interface is very quick and effective to use
• Reliability--this is key for us, as any downtime effects our reputation
• Keeps the costs down--hosting our own equivalent infrastructure would cost a lot more

• Offers less control over the underlying server.
• Storage options are more limited than EC2.
• Large numbers of tasks may hit launch-rate limits.

• In terms of an availability zone, they have limitations not available in most of the geographical locations.
• No live support is available which can cause problem if you have outage.
• Number of service is quite limited.

It's a very practical service to use. If you need to deploy any application with a Database, disk storage, you're pretty much set.

Everything around that can be taken care of using other AWS services. Like secrets manager, certificate manager, RDS ...

And the CI/CD part is also very easy to setup, you only need on AWS CLI command to trigger a deployment, and done !

Other platforms dashboard console is more difficult to use. DigitalOcean's dashboard is clean, simple, and straightforward

AWS provides different support tiers. They are usually very reactive and are able to help solve the issues very quickly.

As for everything, the higher the support tier you get, the better and faster support you get.

If you're also a part of big company, you probably have solution architects at your disposal to help you with any inqueries.

DigitalOcean Droplets is continuously evolving to be more and more powerful. It has great features and has low cost options, which is really great for developers. Its CDN, Loadbalancer, etc. make it a good place to host a high-traffic application. Moroever, DigitalOcean Droplets has a nonprofit program that helps nonprofit sites to run their infrastructure, which is tremendous and no competitor of DigitalOcean Droplets does that.

Pricing and billing of AWS Fargate is loosely tied to your exisiting AWS billing. You're unlikely to only use Fargate in your AWS subscription, so you get billed for everything alltoghter.

Fargate is naturally a bit more expensive that usuel docker services, but with careful planning and architecturing, you can have a very manageable cost.

You can also rely on Saving plans to reduce your bill.

• Has made seasonal apps/tools cheap to run/maintain.
• Pay for what you use helps compare many A/B tests.
