Check Point Quantum Security Gateway

Check Point Next Generation Firewall is a great solution for larger companies that have the ability to dedicate a large budget towards information security controls. In order to get the best return on investment, however, the company should have a highly functioning information security maturity level and the ability to invest in dedicated training so that all features are utilized effectively. The SmartEvent dashboards are able to provide ongoing data that can track this effectively.

Forcepoint NGFW

If you are looking for a smaller network/security team, the ease and low complexity create an easy to manage environment. One engineer can easily manage 100 nodes/locations. If you are just starting to get security conscious and predict regular adjustments to policy, routing, and access, this is a very good system for making easy to understand and low impact changes on a regular basis without operations interruption.

Pros

Check Point Quantum Security Gateway

  • Logging -- Logs are clearly displayed with all information about the packet
  • Canned reports -- The reports "out of the box" are pretty nice and give you a lot of detail
  • Rule Configuration -- Defining (basic) rules is easy to do, and understandable

Forcepoint NGFW

  • Easy to manage and make changes on - ACL's are done with ease.
  • Easy USB initial configuration - The easy initial setup of a new location and firewall saves massive time. Settings are automatically pushed to new nodes upon contact with the controller.
  • Low Complexity - This system does not have a lot of complexity requiring extra hours, training, or personnel to manage.

Cons

Check Point Quantum Security Gateway

  • Check Point has a complex range of reporting tools, some of which can take time to learn and be comfortable with.
  • The firewall is solid and needs to have someone with training to manage it which means any little mistake can bring down the network and have you on the phone with Check Point support.
  • They are pricey for some of the hardware and reporting tools.

Forcepoint NGFW

  • Poor Reporting - It exists but even when calling in to support for assistance, they have no idea how to tackle customizing reports or searching for specific data.

Support Rating

Check Point has a variety of support options that can be used to optimize your investment in the product. Companies with a larger information security and certified checkpoint engineer employee base can benefit from a standard SLA, while companies with a smaller security engineering footprint or more critical implementations can opt for premium, elite or diamond packages that even include the ability to provide on-site engineers for major security incidents. Check Point PRO support also provides the ability to outsource maintenance concerns by automating case creation and follow up when application components fail.

Alternatives Considered

Check Point Quantum Security Gateway

At the time when we were evaluating Fortinet, it was not a layer 7, while Check Point did offer this. It appears that since then they have created next-gen firewalls as well. The interface of Check Point is a little easier to use (although the interface tends to use a lot of bright pink colors)

Forcepoint NGFW

There are similar hardware and license costs between the two products. The Forcepoint NGFW product is by far easier to use and manage.

Return on Investment

Check Point Quantum Security Gateway

  • Although there are better alternatives out there, Check Point delivers results for the price we paid for the system.
  • Since implementation, we have not have any major issues with the product, minor issues were resolved in a timely fashion.
  • Check Point currently fulfills our need for an outside facing firewall, when our organization grows larger, we will be looking at higher level enterprise solutions.

Forcepoint NGFW

  • Efficiency/Productivity increase. The company moved from Cisco firewall and routing hardware to Forcepoint NGFW. It now takes fewer people and fewer hours to manage the new product. This has allowed the company to put the man-hours to use on other projects and tasks.
  • Long term viability. This has been a concern in the past when the company started as Stonegate, merged to become Stonesoft then got purchased by McAfee, then McAfee got purchased by Intel. However, with Forcepoint the product seems to have found a stable home.
  • Low complexity. The Web GUI based system for management has reduced the cost of personnel and training required. There is no longer a need for the company to have higher trained and higher salary cost employees to manage the system. Mid-level admins at lower salaries are capable of managing the GUI based system with ease.
