It's a great fit if you’re looking for a user-friendly C++ IDE; comfortable with using Vim; looking for a fast, intuitive UI; or teaching your students C/C++. It wouldn’t be a good fit if you’re more comfortable with command-line based IDEs or planning to code in multiple languages, as it only supports C and C++.

IntelliJ IDEA

IntelliJ IDEA has been a great tool to develop Javascript and Java services for myself. Debugging/Running code is effortless and requires minimal configuration by the user. I prefer using a GUI to text configuration, and IntelliJ IDEA provides that very well. It would be nice if they provided textual configuration in addition to the UI.There are many default configurations to run different scripts without having to search the internet to find examples for how to get the IDE set up.

Pros

CLion

  • Simplifies collaboration of coders in case of extensive source code base.
  • Almost flat learning curve if you have been using JetBrains products before.

IntelliJ IDEA

  • Unit testing: Fully integrated into IntelliJ IDEA. Your unit tests will run smoothly and efficiently, with excellent debugging tools for when things get tricky.
  • Spring integration: Our Spring project using Maven works flawlessly in IntelliJ IDEA. I know firsthand that Apache is also easily and readily supported too. The integration is seamless and very easy to set up using IntelliJ IDEA's set up wizard when importing new projects.
  • Customization: IntelliJ IDEA comes out of the box with a bunch of handy shortcuts, as well as text prediction, syntax error detection, and other tools to help keep your code clean. But even better is that it allows for total customization of shortcuts you can easily create to suit your needs.

Cons

CLion

  • Committing and pushing to git takes a lot of time.
  • Spell check sometimes give funny results, indicating wrong places for parentheses.

IntelliJ IDEA

  • IntelliJ IDEA wins as long as the language is Java. Outside that , e.g., in other languages, it is not so advanced.
  • It is licensed, with a steep licensing cost. All features are not included in the free edition.
  • It is not as light as Eclipse, so in a weak system, it can be a pain.

VS Code is maturing and has a Scala plugin now. The overall experience with VS Code - for web development at least - is very snappy/fast. IntelliJ feels a bit sluggish in comparison. If that Scala plugin for VS Code is deemed mature enough - we may not bother renewing and resort to the Community Edition if we need it.

CLion does everything I ask it to do. For me, Unreal Engine 4 compatibility was essential and Epic Game and JetBrains delivered a solid alternative to spending a huge amount of money on the "standard" IDE for game development on Windows. The user interface is sharp and modern without all of the silly frills many software suites now employ. It integrates well with source control systems we use and also works well, as expected, with other JetBrains development tools and assistants.

User experience is one of the top points that distinguish IntelliJ from other Java IDEs. Migrating from other IDEs to IntelliJ is very easy, importing the code formatting style is easy as well. It is just a very smooth process and a decision I think any pro Java developer should make.

I was not forced to get in direct contact with CLion support. However, it is quite clear that they are doing a really decent job when it comes to providing assistance to their customers. Updates, including bug fixes, are being roll-outed in a reasonable manner, and bigger upgrades always include some interesting features.

I never really needed support as the product is solid. Any questions that do come up can usually be resolved via online resources. IntelliJ IDEA is popular enough to have a big enough community for you to find answers to common questions. They do have a public bug tracker if you run into issues, but I personally find it difficult to navigate and keep track of.

This installs just like any other application - its pretty straight forward. Perhaps licensing could be more challenging - but if you use the cloud licensing they offer its as simple as having engineers login to the application and it just works.

IntelliJ IDEA

We actually use both Eclipse and IntelliJ for our Java applications. We left it up to developers to choose use either or both tools for their work, in case they want IntelliJ our department supported the fee for use. In general developers preferred IntelliJ for Java application development, and Eclipse for web development or integration project. There wasn't a big learning huddle when developers switch one environment to the other. By this the two tools are complementary, and not conflict.

Return on Investment

CLion

  • Better, faster debugging with quicker delivery of software.
  • Its mobility and speed resulted in better cross-platform development process and faster delivery.

IntelliJ IDEA

  • IDEA significantly speeds up the development lifecycle. Developers can think more about their code and less about what needs to be done at the syntax and filesystem level.
  • IDEA has such a large user base that it's easy to find people for your organisation that can hit the ground running with it.
  • Using a standard code template helps to standardise the code across the team.
