Clonezilla vs. IBM DevOps Code ClearCase

CloneZilla has several scenarios where it can be used in business. Firstly the main purpose for us is for imaging of larger number of systems with varying specifications and operating systems in quick succession. However we have also used it for "point of time" imaging of systems for when employees have left the company or have a full metal backup made.

IBM Rational ClearCase might be better suited for a smaller / simpler code base. Larger code bases really slow it down... but then again there are better alternatives out there for source control

• The ability to quickly setup imaging servers to rapidly increase the number of systems imaged.
• Handling large numbers of device imaging off a single live server instance
• Ability to run the server side of things on low end hardware

• Rational ClearCase is excellent for handling versioning and branching. No other tool I've used has the depth that ClearCase has when it comes to handling complex branching scenarios and identifying where certain versions of particular files are within a particular configuration.
• Rational ClearCase handles parallel development of many dependent applications really well.
• The use of ClearCase Views to switch between projects and configurations is extremely convenient as opposed to the local workstation model of the competitors.

• The interface is not easy to navigate or understand by non technical staff
• Many many key presses before an actual image starts processing
• Does not feel "clean" - in that it feels very batch driven rather than having a more simpler way of managing the process end to end.

• Extremely buggy.

Whilst other imaging and deployment suites provide nicer interfaces which suit less technical staff, they do have quite significant price differences in comparison to CloneZilla. CloneZilla not only provides us a significant number of features, it provides a full imaging solution at a price which no one can compete with!

If development is centrallized to one location and your company releases hundreds of customized versions of your software per year, then ClearCase is the best tool for managing the complexity of multiple versions of customized software. If your company has globally distributed development, then I'd recommend Team Foundation Server over ClearCase. If your organization uses Agile Methodologies, then I'd recommend TFS with GIT.

• CloneZilla provides us a very cheap solution for imaging of systems in our business
• It has allowed us to rapidly increase our ability to image more systems across multiple locations
• CloneZilla has allowed us to adapt and evolve our imaging environment to handle lots of different scenarios with little issues

• Managed code versioning for many years.
• Only one person can edit code at a time - slows processing down.
• IBM is an expensive product to support.
