What is Clonezilla?

Clonezilla is free and open source software for disk imaging and cloning, under the GNU General Public License (GPL) Version 2. Three types of Clonezilla are available, Clonezilla live, Clonezilla lite server, and Clonezilla SE (server edition). Clonezilla live is suitable for single machine backup and restore, and Clonezilla lite server or SE is for massive deployment, and can clone 40 plus computers simultaneously.

Features:
  • File systems are supported: (1) ext2, ext3, ext4, reiserfs, reiser4, xfs, jfs, btrfs, f2fs and nilfs2 of GNU/Linux, (2) FAT12, FAT16, FAT32, exFAT and NTFS of MS Windows, (3) HFS+ and APFS of Mac OS, (4) UFS of FreeBSD, NetBSD, and OpenBSD, (5) minix of Minix, and (6) VMFS3 and VMFS5 of VMWare ESX. Therefore users can clone GNU/Linux, MS windows, Intel-based Mac OS, FreeBSD, NetBSD, OpenBSD, Minix, VMWare ESX and Chrome OS/Chromium OS, no matter it's 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x86-64) OS. For these file systems, only used blocks in partition are saved and restored by Partclone. For unsupported file system, sector-to-sector copy is done by dd in Clonezilla.
  • LVM2 (LVM version 1 is not) under GNU/Linux is supported.
  • LUKS (Linux Unified Key Setup) is supported.
  • Boot loader, including grub (version 1 and version 2) and syslinux, could be reinstalled.
  • Both MBR and GPT partition formats of hard drive are supported. Clonezilla live also can be booted on a BIOS or uEFI machine.
  • Unattended mode is supported. Almost all steps can be done via commands and options.
  • One image restoring to multiple local devices is supported.
  • Image could be encrypted. This is done with ecryptfs, a POSIX-compliant enterprise cryptographic stacked filesystem.
  • Multicast is supported in Clonezilla SE, which is suitable for massive clone. Users can also remotely use it to save or restore a bunch of computers if PXE and Wake-on-LAN are supported in clients.
  • Bittorrent (BT) is supported in Clonezilla lite server, which is suitable for massive deployment. The job for BT mode is done by Ezio.
  • The image file can be on local disk, ssh server, samba server, NFS server or WebDAV server.
  • AES-256 encryption could be used to secures data access, storage and transfer.
  • Based on Partclone (default), Partimage (optional), ntfsclone (optional), or dd to image or clone a partition. However, Clonezilla, containing some other programs, can save and restore not only partitions, but also a whole disk.

Clonezilla has proven to be an invaluable tool for users looking to clone old hard drives to solid state drives. By ensuring that everything is precisely the same on the new drive, it eliminates any data loss or discrepancies during the migration process. This is particularly useful for businesses that need to upgrade their machines without risking valuable information or disrupting operations. Users have praised Clonezilla for its speed and simplicity in machine backup and restore, allowing them to quickly and easily restore machinery and back up important data. This not only minimizes downtime but also provides peace of mind knowing that their systems can be easily recovered in case of any unforeseen events.

The software's versatility shines through in both small-scale and large-scale deployments. With the ability to clone up to 40 computers simultaneously, Clonezilla becomes an efficient solution for businesses with a high volume of machines to manage. Additionally, Clonezilla's unique feature of saving and restoring only used blocks on the hard disk significantly increases cloning efficiency. This means that unnecessary duplication of unused space is avoided, resulting in faster cloning times and optimized disk usage.

One of the key advantages users have found with Clonezilla is its cost-effectiveness. Compared to some competitors with higher price tags, Clonezilla offers similar functionality at a more affordable price point. This makes it an attractive choice for organizations looking for an imaging solution that fits within their budget. Moreover, Clonezilla's ability to facilitate the installation of operating systems on multiple computers ensures that all machines are identical in terms of their characteristics, eliminating inconsistencies or compatibility issues across the network.

Overall, users have found Clonezilla to be a reliable and efficient solution for their cloning and imaging needs. Its ability to seamlessly clone hard drives, perform machine backup and restore, handle large-scale deployments, optimize disk usage, and offer cost-effective imaging solutions make it a valuable tool for businesses of all sizes.

Users recommend using Clonezilla on a small scale to ensure successful operations. This suggestion emphasizes the need for cautious usage and experimentation in order to become familiar with the product's capabilities without risking important data.

We have a requirement to image a very large number of systems (both laptops and desktops) which cover many different hardware brands, specifications, operating systems, etc. CloneZIlla allows us to image many different systems at the same time, at a very affordable (free!) cost.

We are also able to build out image sets and push them to other locations to assist with provisioning systems in different areas and states.
  • The ability to quickly setup imaging servers to rapidly increase the number of systems imaged.
  • Handling large numbers of device imaging off a single live server instance
  • Ability to run the server side of things on low end hardware
  • The interface is not easy to navigate or understand by non technical staff
  • Many many key presses before an actual image starts processing
  • Does not feel "clean" - in that it feels very batch driven rather than having a more simpler way of managing the process end to end.
CloneZilla has several scenarios where it can be used in business. Firstly the main purpose for us is for imaging of larger number of systems with varying specifications and operating systems in quick succession. However we have also used it for "point of time" imaging of systems for when employees have left the company or have a full metal backup made.
  • CloneZilla provides us a very cheap solution for imaging of systems in our business
  • It has allowed us to rapidly increase our ability to image more systems across multiple locations
  • CloneZilla has allowed us to adapt and evolve our imaging environment to handle lots of different scenarios with little issues
Whilst other imaging and deployment suites provide nicer interfaces which suit less technical staff, they do have quite significant price differences in comparison to CloneZilla. CloneZilla not only provides us a significant number of features, it provides a full imaging solution at a price which no one can compete with!
