Codacy

Codacy is a great solution for any SaaS company that ships production code. I would say every situation is well suited for it if you care about quality code, catching potential security risks, and having a solid way to measure code test coverage across your stack. May not be as appropriate for a small non-revenue generating project.

Rider

Rider can pretty much be a drop-in replacement for Visual Studio in most scenarios. The development experience is wonderful, and I have rarely had problems with building, running tests, and debugging applications. You might need to keep around Visual Studio to publish or build installers, but the Rider team is constantly adding feature parity and new features, so the future looks even stronger.

Pros

Codacy

  • Automation - Regularly check-up for your code commits. For example, you push code to Git, it will automatically update your code ratings
  • Code Support - They support all major languages, for example, Python, PHP, JAVA. Thus, it becomes fast and easy to get real-time quality for your code.
  • Analytics - Intuitive UI and easy dashboard give a clear display of your codebase.
  • Reach - Codacy is very popular and the only good source of code quality solution.

Rider

  • Useful C# refactoring suggestions with indications of which options are available for different versions of the C# language
  • Deep understanding of the Unity game engine, which means that Rider can flag potential problems such as being careful with the use of the null coalescing and null propagation/conditional operators on types that derive from UnityEngine.Object.
  • Good searching and navigation facilities make it easier to understand unfamiliar code.

Cons

Codacy

  • Could be faster.
  • Sometimes settings configuration pages are overwhelming.

Rider

  • We feel that C# support could be a bit better.
  • Performance on low-end machines is not the best.

Rider is a great IDE with extensive C# refactoring support and .NET-specific knowledge. This is great for building .NET applications but for our purposes, the Unity specific suggestions are really helpful.
JetBrains Rider is great as an editing and debugging environment. It reliably connects to the Unity editor and allows debugging, which some IDEs are not as reliable at doing.

Customer support provided by JetBrains is quite fast and effective. The issues we have encountered were solved within days, which we find reasonable and a very adequate time frame. Bug fixes are added to releases depending on their severity which makes perfect sense. However, we have not encountered any issue which we would consider to be a major problem.

Alternatives Considered

Codacy

Codacy provides a good support mechanism and has very intuitive UI. Even a newbie can understand the details of a code base. The best part is you don't have to manually update everything. Once you have connected the git repository, it will automatically rate the code and updates according to your commits.

Rider

Rider is hands down smoother and way less glitchy than Visual Studio Enterprise. There are way more refactoring capabilities and spell check so that your code is readable, maintainable, and easy to follow. Since Rider is cross-platform, our developers are no longer constrained to only using Windows. We can now get a familiar development environment across Mac, Windows, or Linux!

Return on Investment

Codacy

  • The best part after implementing the tool is that we now stand a benchmark. Our clients are more than happy to have a good quality of code.
  • Increased efficiency, decision making, code reach, privacy, and standards which means it is easily acceptable internationally.
  • Even you enter private information in a piece of code, it automatically asks you to remove any vulnerable information which can harm your privacy.
  • Pricing is a bit high for personal customizations.

Rider

  • Saved me a ton of time refactoring code, especially when editing web files in our project. The lack of full SAAS and JavaScript support in Visual Studio is a drain on time. Rider makes it super quick to get all the work done.
  • Their performance profilers that are built into Rider saved us hours upon hours of manpower tracking down memory and speed issues with our code. Highly recommended!
