iMovie

If you or your organization need to perform some simple video editing tasks but don't need the feature set of a pro-editor - the free with a Mac iMovie is the way to go. It's a true gateway into the FCPX universe but not necessarily something you have to invest a ton of time to learn and put to use.

Pros

Corel VideoStudio Pro

  • Over 1000 filters and effects.
  • Enjoy multi-camera editing.
  • Play with speed.

iMovie

  • Easy to use. It doesn’t get any easier than iMovie IMHO. The drop and drag interface is fairly intuitive. No need for a giant manual to get started.
  • Just enough tools. For the layman you need to know where to drop in audio, title screens, transitions, etc. no more, no less. It’s not the most sophisticated but it can get the job done quickly.
  • You can use it on multiple interfaces. For example, I use iMovie on my iPhone, iPad, AND my Mac and it’s all rather seamless. You can start a project in one place and pick it up somewhere else. Now that’s flexible.

Cons

Corel VideoStudio Pro

  • Updates need to be done on a timely basis.
  • Price is high for initial purchase.
  • Video editing sometimes can be cumbersome.

iMovie

  • It takes a long time to export videos from iMovie. Depending on the length of the project you're working on, it could take a few hours.
  • There are a decent amount of effects and transitions to use, but the customization of them is lacking.
  • iMovie is only available for Apple devices. Windows has other options, but if you're used to iMovie and have to switch to a Windows computer, you might miss the user-friendliness that came from iMovie.

I'd give it a higher rating but there seems to be some things that are so over-simplified that it's tough for an experienced user to work backwards when needed. That said, it certainly is easy enough for a 7 year old to pick up and use without much instruction or training.

Updates are rare and it could be improved with a forum that addresses issues.

Apple does a great job supporting its products. I have never encountered trouble that could not be solved through chat or email. The knowledgebase section of the website, video tutorials online and various user forums also help with most issues. If after using all of these avenues you still have an issue, it may be time for you to outsource your project to a professional!

Alternatives Considered

Corel VideoStudio Pro

The original pricing was affordable and the ability to create a video quickly is amazing. Solid product from Corel.

iMovie

iMovie has all the capability most video producers need. Great videos are made in the editing because the right content is already there. Adobe has a great product but their editing software doesn't have to be that intense, as when it is, it takes away from the great creative intelligence that's already in there. We have several Adobe products but their film editing options are unnecessarily complex (and far too expensive.) Using Adobe we were corrupting original video more than we were editing. Final Cut is great product too, but it's overkill for us.In a world where entire Sundance Film Festival winning films can be made entirely on an iPhone 5, the video-editing software needs to be just what we've found iMovie to be: Simple to use, brilliantly capable, and affordable.

Corel VideoStudio Pro

  • Not multi-user a license used for each workstation.

iMovie

  • iMovie is free along with any Mac hardware. So as long as you can afford a MacBook, you are sorted on the software cost. We had Macs, so we were sorted.
  • iMovie is a top-notch native software made by Apple. So overall stability and performance is great. We never lost data.
  • We were able to fully edit and churn out 20 to 40 mins of video every day with even an intern working on iMovie.
