CorelCAD

CorelCAD is ideally suited for creating mechanical 2D drawings for metal parts and assemblies. It is equally suited for architectural drawings. It is less well suited for creating 3D models. It also works well as an intermediary to convert between different CAD systems.CorelCAD offers a compelling and relatively low-cost solution that covers the vast majority of business needs creating both internal use drawings, drawings for fabricated parts, and creating more elaborate drawings to incorporate within CorelDraw documents.

Solid Edge

Well Suited for:
  • Integrated designs performed by multiple designers simultaneously (designs requiring a Product Lifecycle Management system);
  • Designs requiring a high degree of parameterisation;
  • Large companies where specific standards and best practices are applied to all models and drawings created.
Not Well Suited for:
  • Personal use in designing one-off models and drawings;
  • Small business use where very few of the expensive features are actually used.

Pros

CorelCAD

  • 2D and 3D mechanical drawings
  • Interchange with AutoCAD users and other CAD users.
  • Publish technical data sheets and drawings.
  • Creating PDF documents

Solid Edge

  • Allows designers to work as they choose and not have to acclimate their work for the product's requirements. This results in productive use of Edge, thus an ROI for the company.
  • Manage large (high count of components) assemblies very well. Users spend little to no time trying to overcome speed issue with respect to assemblies.
  • Synchronous Design! This highly productive design process is unique to Edge and very addictive

Cons

CorelCAD

  • For those unfamiliar with AutoCAD the interface can be a little overwhelming.
  • Expanded 3D functionality

Solid Edge

  • Being used to 2-key and 3-key commands from the keyboard, it would be nice if this was more robust in Solid Edge. The capability of programming keystroke commands exists in Solid Edge, but it would be more user friendly in that regard.
  • Editing hatches can be a challenge.
  • I'm not a fan of the ribbon bar, but that seems to be a feature across software platforms in Windows.

The most important aspects are extremely easy to use. The hard to use parts are mostly because I'm not familiar with it yet.

Corel's support has always been outstanding. Technical support is always available to assist with installation and licensing issues and there is generally additional free assistance for a time period after purchase. Corel also offers online tutorials and other self-help resources. Ongoing and available support is one of the outstanding features Corel has always provided.

I have never personally had to deal with the support team for Siemens Solid Edge, but I have engaged them through a few colleagues. Any time that I have had a query, or have had to ask for a Home-Use Licence, the response to my query has been forthcoming within 2-3 hours.

Alternatives Considered

CorelCAD

AutoCAD compares favorably to TurboCAD at a comparable price point to its mid-line product. TurboCAD offers both higher level and lower level products that expand on the capabilities of CorelCAD, but for the majority of users, CorelCAD offers a good compromise of features to price point while maintaining a structure that will be familiar to AutoCAD users.When compared with AutoCAD products, it aligns most closely with AutoCAD LT and compares favorably in terms of functions and features. AutoCAD has moved primarily to a subscription model which I personally do not like. With CorelCAD, buy it, own it, and upgrade when new features are needed.

Solid Edge

I've used both SOLIDWORKS and Solid Edge. I prefer Solid Edge over SOLIDWORKS due to the ease of use. They are pretty similar, but the performance is the same as long as you have a good workstation. The price is less since Siemens owns the Parasolid kernel. It may just be a preference, but Solid Edge works great for me.

Return on Investment

CorelCAD

  • CorelCAD easily pays for itself even when not a primary product.
  • Due to its similarity to AutoCAD, it's a reasonable solution with a shortened learning curve for existing AutoCAD users.

Solid Edge

  • Helped with meeting deadlines better because a user can spend more time designing thanks to ST and less time redefining/studying models to incorporate required changes. Better ROI.
  • Efforts are being made in to address this, but offering the software for free to schools, having effective marketing, and having more regional reps to attract customers and to produce more competent users for hiring. This will allow for more recruitment at vocational schools and allow company training to focus more on internal processes and less time on Solid Edge training.
  • Solid Edge has played a big role helping secondary students realize their designs faster and easier.
