D2iQ Mesosphere

Mesosphere is well suited for orchestrating workloads. It supports Docker as a container as well as support others. It is highly suitable for running resilient and auto recovering big data/application containers. Mesosphere has proven time and again to be production ready at a massive scale. It supports native single button/API call scale up and scale down and supports various deployment patterns like Blue-Green and others.

Mirantis OpenStack for Kubernetes

Mirantis is well suited for someone who doesn't mind spending money but doesn't quite want to commit to a cloud provider like AWS. It is also well suited for small or junior technical teams that don't have the skills, experience, or time to run their own openstack clusters.

Pros

D2iQ Mesosphere

  • Deploying applications (e.g. Cassandra, Jenkins, Spark) on to mesosphere
  • Providing value add components such as velocity, and marathon-lb

Mirantis OpenStack for Kubernetes

  • Works out of the box. There is very little back-end configuration necessary for users.
  • The support is active and response times are very good.
  • Staff is extremely knowledgeable and can help with more complex concepts and design ideas.

Cons

D2iQ Mesosphere

  • Setting up is a bit of a hassle, especially ZooKeeper state management and mesos and marathon quorum.
  • Occasionally, I observed some failures when deploying something onto Marathon. Logging or detailed error reporting can help.
  • Stale containers and inconsistent states resultant of the cluster failure are hard to solve and need a complete system restart to get it back to normal state.

Mirantis OpenStack for Kubernetes

  • Mirantis OpenStack managed services are expensive. Very expensive for a start-up.
  • I'd personally like to see a little more under the hood details in the status pages.
  • Mirantis could also benefit heavily from a free "light" version that start-ups could use to run their own cloud. Maybe coupled with advertising or some sort of surveys.

Alternatives Considered

D2iQ Mesosphere

I happen to like mesosphere because it integrates well with a Jenkins based workflow, Deis is a little more Heroku like and it's not clear how to fit that model into a continuous-integration process. Kubernetes has also been criticized for being complicated.

Mirantis OpenStack for Kubernetes

Mirantis is a managed service. If you're looking for that type of support, infra management, and to relieve yourself of the burden then they are a great option. If you're looking to build your own cloud and save as much money as possible then running openStack yourself is your best option. I would say in the category of OpenStack managed services Mirantis is ahead of Ubuntu (who uses JuJu to manage everything) but behind Rackspace

Return on Investment

D2iQ Mesosphere

  • I see mesosphere as having a positive impact overall on the industry trending Docker and containers in general.
  • Seeing how mesosphere helps and simplifies things for the developer and ops, it is definitely a game changer.
  • Native support of on demand scaling up and down as per the need is one of the best features.

Mirantis OpenStack for Kubernetes

  • Mirantis did help our business figure out if openstack was right for us.
  • Using Mirantis I felt a bit cheated on understanding the deep technical knowledge of how openstack works. But that being said that is probably a value add more than a detractor for most people.
  • Using Mirantis was considerably cheaper than AWS.
