Dell ECS vs. IBM Storage Scale vs. Scality ARTESCA

Dell ECS is well-suited for organizations that can't afford to store data in the public cloud. It also provides a much cheaper solution to store archived data that is not frequently accessed. However, it's not suitable for small-scale storage requirements as it will not be cost-effective. Also, it can't be used for low-latency databases as it will cause performance issues.

When you get a Spectrum Scale solution from IBM you are certain of two things. 1) You will need a specialized storage admin who will be able to take all of its advantages and make available for your organization. It is an appliance that not so many storage admins would be comfortable working on. Invest properly on both hardware and human resources. 2) You will scale forever. We started with a couple of hundred of Terabytes and grew to dozens of Petabytes.

The team in charge of implementing Scality has to be full stack in order to guarantee the correct functioning of the entire system. However, you have to think very carefully about the balance between servers and disks, perhaps adopting smaller fully populated servers instead of large semi-populated servers, which would mean that over time our disk updates will not have a fully useful life.

Dell ECS is working well for our organisation. On the one hand, we can leverage cloud technology; on the other, we can keep it in our own data centre, thus ensuring full security for sensitive data. With Dell ECS, we are saving a lot on the monthly bill that we used to pay for the cloud storage solution.

As an organization, it took us a while to understand the shift from a traditional black box SAN to software-defined storage, but now we are much more certain of what this means. The time invested and the resources were not very high, thanks on the one hand to the technical support and on the other to the coherence and good development of the platform.

Because of Dell's proven reliability and stability, it's well-suited to large enterprises compared to its competitors. Its Geo-distribution technology protects data across sites in a very cost-effective manner. It supports storage for both modern and legacy applications. Its archive storage costs are much lower than those of its competitors. It saves monthly bills as we own the hardware.

Due to the nature of our business we require extensive encryption and availability for sensitive customer data. The erasure encoding that Scality provides gives us the assurance that documents are rest are never in a state of being downloaded or available to a casual data thief. This is something that can be found with other vendors but at a fraction of the same cost. Having this kind of performance, availability and redundancy at the cost that Scality provides has made a large difference to our organization.
