FortiManager

FortiManager is well suited for any environment with multiple and dispersed FortiGate firewalls. It will not manage other firewall platforms. Therefore, you either have to use multiple centralized management software, one for each firewall vendor, or invest in alternative tools such as Tufin, AlgoSec, FireMon, SolarWinds, etc. However, you will not get a more inclusive tool for your FortiGate firewalls other than FortiManager.

SolarWinds Engineer's Toolset

I have found the toolset especially useful for scanning subnets to discover devices, and for setting up temporary real-time monitors when we are troubleshooting or setting up new connections. The most useful aspect has been the ability to apply the tools to help troubleshoot and pinpoint intermittent issues. More general tools like Orion often do not have the granularity to detect issues like intermittent packet loss which are especially impactful to applications like Voice. The toolset gives us another level of capability to dig into issues.

Cons

FortiManager

  • Support contracts are difficult to manage or make changes to
  • Next Generation subscriptions are managed individually, i.e. pegged to specific firewalls
  • Cumbersome to bring existing firewalls to be covered under a single contract

Very easy to use and intuitive. Just be careful with the WAN Killer...it does what it says.

Alternatives Considered

FortiManager

FortiManager is the best choice for managing numerous FortiGate firewalls. It allows for easy integration into ServiceNow and automates simple repetitive tasks that are very straightforward. Role-based access control is easy to enable and you can get quite granular with user permissions. Administrative Domains help segregate firewall management and compliance within the FortiManager console, by almost any classification method that makes sense to your organization.

SolarWinds Engineer's Toolset

I have used both LogicMonitor and Dynatrace and they perform a similar job, they have many of the same basic tools, but where SolarWinds Engineer's Toolset really stands out is in some of the more advanced tools like config compare for switch and router configs, this is not something the other competitors offer.

FortiManager

  • Allowed for quick migration from legacy firewall platforms
  • NOC and SOC visibility of entire threat surface
  • Intuitive user interface
  • Extremely quick learning curve

SolarWinds Engineer's Toolset

  • Having a better understanding of the network can help identify vulnerabilities that may otherwise hit with a high costs. Though it may be difficult to calculate the ROI, but having this peace of mind will eliminate other costs in the long term.
