IBM Cloud Functions

IBM Cloud Functions [is] not the worse product on the IBM cloud. I decided to write this review as I thought it would be balanced. I would still use functions to set up a serverless architecture where execution time is pretty quick and the code is relatively simple.I wouldn't use IBM Cloud Functions for async calls obviously, as costs could be higher. The functions documentation is lacking in terms of CI/CD, and there are unexplainable errors occurring - like the network connection that I mentioned. So I wouldn't just rely on IBM Cloud Functions too much for the entire system, but make sure it's diversified.

IBM Cloud Managed Istio

Currently use for traffic management for IOT edge devices and their sensor data flows. IoT generates lots of data and this data needs to processed at the edge devices before sending the processed result to cloud. Hence there is always ingress and egress data traffic in and out of the IoT edge devices which needs traffic management

IBM has good track record, but we haven't used their support after getting setup initially. However, the training made available by them during our introductory experience was good, and provided us with a lot of useful background knowledge along with guidance on how to address the specific use cases we were looking for.

IBM Cloud Managed Istio

We did not use IBM professional services to implement istio. Our experience was such that getting it setup quickly did not require assistance. We did however, make use of IBM's training opportunities at kube con 2019, which included a walkthrough setup of istio on IBM Cloud. This provided us with a strong base on which to build.

Return on Investment

IBM Cloud Functions

  • It directly affected our expenses since we do not need to deploy and maintain a set of separate applications.
  • It allowed us to pay for only the amount of time cloud functions run.
  • It saved on maintenance and monitoring of the applications it replaced.
