Localize vs. Play.ht

Localized fits perfectly for clients who would love to have their website localized. It offers great plugins and integrations with popular content management systems and serves as a translation management system for your website. Setup is rather easy, however, more complex setups would require a more technical approach which is not always possible.

Play.ht is generally suited for almost all text-to-speech needs. If you wanted clear and realistic audio, Play.ht was really good for that. However, the main challenge it had was its payment model. In our experience, from paying roughly $500 for our package, they jumped the cost to $10,000 and justified it by saying we should not have been paying that low.

• Super easy integration - it takes one minute to add and configure the Localize WordPress plugin.
• Convenient Admin - it is straight forward to add a project, get the API key and start adding translations.
• Front End display - the switch between language is intuitive and efficient. It loads all languages super fast.

Very simple to use website.

It was very simple to use and easy to learn for the most part. The biggest challenge in using it was that you would need to know how to use the International Phonetic Alphabet to get the precise tone that you wanted the tool to make. This was easier said than done since not everyone could write in that way easily. That said, knowing IPA was not essential.

Great support documentation is available on their platform and can solve 95% of your queries. Other queries are often resolved in a timely fashion and with attention to detail.

Frankly, we don't know what other translation management systems are out there, so we can't comment on how they compare to Localize.

Overall, they do roughly the same thing. I switched out of Play.ht into NaturalReader because, in my experience, NaturalReader had clearer pricing models. In terms of functionality, they weren't much different. I'd recommend NaturalReader more since it is simpler to subscribe to them and start rather than use Play.ht and be confused about their pricing model.

• Localize was setup and running on 4 websites in under 8 weeks.
• Project was delivered well under budget with minimal problems.
