Mailbutler GmbH
Mailbutler is well suited to people who predominantly use their Mac for email. It adds a rich feature set to macOS Mail's native features. Mailbutler is less useful to people who frequently process email on iOS/iPadOS. Only a limited subset of Mailbutler's functionality is available on iOS/iPadOS as Apple doesn't currently provide a way for third parties to extend the iOS/iPadOS Mail app.

Thunderbird
I like that it's free, I like that it's open-source, and the fact that it allows IMAP lets me have this on all 3 laptops and it's synced. I would never consider using it as my primary email client, however; just too clunky and can't navigate around fast enough the way I do with Gmail. And not even close to having all the features I'd need that Gmail does: 30 second undo-sending, canned responses, easy-to-create signatures for each email address (I literally toggle over to Gmail, compose a message, and paste my sig into the body of Thunderbird emails, so clunky), all spam ends up in my inbox even after I've marked enough as spam that it should know, email labeling and filtering... Gmail is just way more advanced and feature-ful. But, Thunderbird does beat my ridiculous RoundCube webmail interface!

Cons
Mailbutler GmbH
  • Mailbutler occasionally conflicts with other macOS Mail plug-ins. Though, in most (if not all) cases the issue tends to be with other plugins.
  • The Mail app for iOS/iPadOS doesn't support plugins, making it necessary to use Mailbutler's own app to access a limited subset of the functionality on macOS/iPadOS.

Support is generally very good. Occasionally the response time is a bit slower than I'd like.

I'm not aware of any other products that provide the same functionality within the macOS Mail client. There are some third-party email apps for macOS and iOS/iPadOS that have some of Mailbutler's features, but my preference is to stay with Apple's Mail client, partially for security reasons.

Return on Investment
Mailbutler GmbH
  • Mailbutler's effect for me personally is unquantifiable - but it really helps me stay on top of the myriad emails that pass through my inbox each day.
  • I would imagine that across a larger organization, Mailbutler's impact on overall productivity has the potential to be immense!

Thunderbird
  • Its FREE and donation based. Can't get better than that.
  • I love that we aren't giving away our privacy to Google.
  • And I especially love that it's a grass-rootsy endeavor.
