Mirantis OpenStack for Kubernetes vs. SUSE Harvester

Mirantis is well suited for someone who doesn't mind spending money but doesn't quite want to commit to a cloud provider like AWS. It is also well suited for small or junior technical teams that don't have the skills, experience, or time to run their own openstack clusters.

It's great for provisioning any kind of virtual servers, but for now, we use it to provision only servers for Rancher managed Kubernetes clusters. But we are considering to provision also virtual servers for all kinds of needs on SUSE Harvester in the near future, as it's getting more and more mature with every release.

• Can be deployed and run on bare metal on premises clouds
• Is highly reliable and highly scalable
• One of the good performance private cloud IAAS platforms available around

• Fast to deploy new virtual machines
• It's easy to use
• Stable and ready for production
• Free and open source
• Has a strong community

• Mirantis OpenStack managed services are expensive. Very expensive for a start-up.
• I'd personally like to see a little more under the hood details in the status pages.
• Mirantis could also benefit heavily from a free "light" version that start-ups could use to run their own cloud. Maybe coupled with advertising or some sort of surveys.

• It takes expertise to set up SUSE Harvester for production
• You need to get used to SUSE Harvester to be as "fluent" as in VMWare ESXi
• You need to well prepare for system upgrades

Mirantis OpenStack for Kubernetes is easily manageable and has seamlessly configurable containers. It also has high reliability and security, which is certainly a positive point for this product. Overall I think it is a worthy competitor in the market to compare for your needs.

We used ESXi for years and were happy with it. Then we implemented Rancher managed Kubernetes clusters with nodes provisioned on VMware ESXi. Later, when SUSE Harvester came out, we started to provision SUSE Rancher nodes on Harvester. Both VMware ESXi and SUSE Harvester are great products, and I think - we are keeping both, at least for now, when SUSE Harvester is a young project.

• Mirantis did help our business figure out if openstack was right for us.
• Using Mirantis I felt a bit cheated on understanding the deep technical knowledge of how openstack works. But that being said that is probably a value add more than a detractor for most people.
• Using Mirantis was considerably cheaper than AWS.

• We can provision more virtual servers
• It's cheaper than competitor products (tbh - it's free, if you don't need support)
• It's easy to manage when you get used to it
