MonetDB vs. Percona Server vs. SAP Adaptive Server Enterprise (ASE)

MonetDB is great when you are performing adhoc queries on a large set of data. For example, if you store data in a typical RDBMS such as MySQL or Postgres and want to join large tables for analytics but the query runs unacceptably slow then MonetDB can act as a second database to offload complex queries. Based on my experience, it may not be a production-ready database since there aren't many DBAs familiar with it and due to lack of documentation, maintenance can become a little tricky.

Percona Server for MySQL covers 100% of our requirements in terms of our OLTP traffic and provides the High Availability levels required through a typical primary and 2 replica's using semi-synchronous replication. We're able to scale our writes using sharding, but a true distributed database would be a great option on top of this. In terms of OLAP traffic, we leverage columns stores available, but Percona Server fairs well

We use this for an inbuilt security management system, where it performs well in a scaled setup with a large volume of live data with high availability. Also, the performance is up to the mark for the large statement flow. From a DBA perspective, a lot of parameters need to be fine-tuned for the specific environment needs, which can cause overhead. Expertise is limited, and the learning curve is steep for the SAP ASE.

• This is an open source software so there are obvious drawbacks, the biggest of which is a lack of documentation.
• MonetDB does not seem to be well known outside of the academic environment so there is less information when you are searching for answers of any type.
• I'd like to see more use cases and/or best practices so that commercial companies like ours can optimally use all of its highly performant features.
• The code is written in C/C++ and this can be negative if you are a mainly java-shop and need UDF - User Defined Function.

• Better documentation
• A better UI

• A quick button for devs to switch instances into a dev mode (eliminating logs, and such).
• Licensing is far too complicated. Simplify pricing.

Our licenses are perpetual. It is the support that we will be renewing. We will renew because we continue to use and receive value from the product.

Well-suited in the security domain, high performance, and low latency of the DBMS. In terms of the DBA perspective, a dedicated monitoring tool (Cockpit) helps a lot in terms of managing the database, which helps in identifying bottlenecks during performance issues. Also, it helps us to send custom alerts related to Database activities.

We have used Five9 in my previous company but on a much smaller scale. It was more expensive, however we were using it for a max of 50 employees, now we need a much bigger platform. We also used Five9 for other things, like phone dialers etc. so it was a little different.

Performance and stability sets Percona Server for MySQL apart from the rest. Percona embraces the upstream version and contributes towards the upstream version making MySQL stronger on two fronts and thus having a much larger community. Many quality contributions have been made by Percona into the base code. Percona provides great tools to support Percona Server for MySQL and this makes the monitoring and management easier

• If you are familiar with a general database concept and played with open source products before then MonetDB will give you immediate return in terms of productivity since developers can quickly develop and verify their test cases involving back-end database with a large sample data set.
• There is a stiff learning curve due to lack of documentation and sparse information available on the internet.
• Overall experience has been positive since MonetDB gives you another option when it comes to building out a data warehouse.

• At the performance level, it maintains and even improves other open-source databases such as MariaDB or some commercial ones such as Oracle.
• If we compare it with MySQL, we could have up to 50% improvement in performance.
• For some small companies or startups, the price of the complete solution and the support can be a bit high.

• Ease of use with minimal training required to write high performance SQL (assumes a knowledge of SQL already).
• Ease of database administration.
• Sometimes upgrades can be difficult.
• Changing platforms can be difficult (changing say from SPARC to Intel).
• Changing operating systems can be difficult (changing from Solaris to linux).
