NetBrain

In Cisco environments (especially IOS and IOS-XE) NetBrain looks nearly perfect. The network is loaded with heaps of information you would never document if you would have to do it manually. The information is there but you can decide what is visible at first glance and for what information you want to zoom in a bit more on the map for. There are still some problems with the automatic documentation and path discovery with virtual L2 firewalls.Although the implementation of the documentation of Cisco ACI is just in the beginning but, if finished, it's probably a great tool to have an end-to-end view of paths from the legacy network into SDN.

SolarWinds Network Configuration Manager (NCM)

SolarWinds NCM is well-suited for most small to large sized companies. It could help technicians and admins monitor the network at their organizations. There is some efficiency in the deployment of the agents to all connected endpoints which makes it great for medium to large networks. For networks with less than 25 endpoints, it would be overkill. Time to setup, implement, and maintain would take away from all other tasks during the day for a single admin or tech

Pros

NetBrain

  • It automatically updates your network documentation.
  • You can search for devices even if they are no longer operational (by a lot of attributes).
  • It can simplify your troubleshooting by showing you the L2/L3 path a packet would take.
  • It can automate and document the steps of troubleshooting tasks to get more information from one level of support to the next.
  • The support team of NetBrain is very fast and very helpful.
  • Heaps of information in the maps.

SolarWinds Network Configuration Manager (NCM)

  • Configuration Comparison Tool is great since you can quickly compare configs in a single pane of glass. To make things easier to identify, NCM will highlight the differences.
  • Vulnerability reporting on all current versions of Cisco IOS/NXOS software. NCM will identify the version of firmware you are using and also list the most well known CVE vulnerabilities that are associated with each version.
  • I appreciate NCM is vendor agnostic. It will consume configs from any network device. It can also be customized to look for certain strings that are missing or to look for certain strings that are present. Very flexible and since it isn't vendor specific, I don't feel like I'm being forced to buy a certain manufacturer to obtain all of the 'features' like I do with other products.

Cons

NetBrain

  • Not all devices are integrated with the same quality.
  • Not all steps are self-explaining.
  • The updates were difficult (but thanks to the help of support no real problem).

SolarWinds Network Configuration Manager (NCM)

  • The NCM does not work particularly well out of the box on some not so popular network hardware like Ubiquiti, Fluid Mesh and others
  • The auto-select device does not always work and sometimes you have to modify a template to get the full backup to work. SolarWinds tech support can help with this if you are not familiar
  • The email notifications of the backups and the deltas are very simple html. It would be nice to see some improvement on the output there. Looks about 10 years old...

I simply love this product for what it does. it backups our configs and stores them so i don't have to worry about if we have current configs. It allows me to recover from a cisco failure in a matter of minutes rather than hours. I only have to copy and paste instead of recreate. so the maximum downtime we have is the time it takes to get the physical hardware replaced

overall usability is easy and simple. you use the discovery element and if all your snmp communities are setup right in your equipment network config manager will have no problems downloading your configs. if you decide to you don't need them for a particular device you simply tell it not to backup using ncm. it's that easy.

They will tell you it's your problem until you prove 3 different ways that it's the system and then they'll "escalate to an engineer" at which point they might help you or close the case blaming some internally well-known thing that isn't shared with customers.

Change management played a key role in our organisation. We didn't have any major downtime but it was crucial for us to get his product.

Alternatives Considered

NetBrain

We used NetViz and Microsoft Visio before.NetViz was a great tool at its time but it's not the best solution anymore and Microsoft Visio is good in a lot of things but more of a Swiss Army knife than a network documentation tool.We had a look at NetTerrain which looked like a good documentation tool and would have given us the advantage of importing our old NetViz documentation. The main disadvantage with all of these tools compared to NetBrain is that the documentation needs to be done manually.

SolarWinds Network Configuration Manager (NCM)

We already had a large SolarWinds deployment before we selected NCM, so there really wasn't an alternative we considered. However, we did also demo NetBrain, which we liked a lot. We didn't go with NetBrain primarily because the pricing was exhorbitant for an enterprise our size.

Return on Investment

NetBrain

  • Network automation is up to date.
  • Quicker failure discovery and resolving due to the path discovery.
  • Less time spent on documentation.
  • Much more details in the documentation.

SolarWinds Network Configuration Manager (NCM)

  • Prior to breaking the baseline function, NCM was considered our most valuable network tool. Without adding any additional FTEs, we could ensure we maintained current backups, ensured consistent application of security settings and can monitor for unauthorized changes.
  • For a very little additional cost, we vastly improved our network security and availability.
