Perplexity vs. Pinecone

Perplexity is helpful when you want auto-code generation for day-to-day problem scenarios such as Powershell script to accomplish a task, Code to invoke a REST API, Class generation from JSON/XML data, etc. It is also helpful when you want to correct or optimize code that you have self-written. Perplexity might not be best suited for scenarios when you need 100% accuracy without your self-verification of correctness.

Similarity search and ranking are fundamental capabilities, and Pinecone just has this nailed. Almost every application, especially those that talk to LLMs, can use this feature, and there is no reason to reinvent it or use anything more complicated or "full stack" than Pinecone. Pinecone is a powerful tool in this space.

• Adding a vector (of course) and we are able to add arbitrary metadata with it.
• Similarity search, ranking and metadata retrieval.
• The webui/console tools are nice when debugging/confirming something. Above-average tooling in this regard.

• Image generation is not upto mark
• Data analysis for excel is way off
• Getting insights on data not available online is hard
• Need to embed like copilot in assisting day to day activities

• Pinecone has come a long way (we have been using it for years). While the tooling used to have some rough edges, I can't really complain these days.
• Migrating an entire database from one AWS zone to another basically required a full data dump and reload. That could be improved. I have not tried AWS=>GCP=>Azure replications/migrations, but suspect they are not yet well supported, and that would be helpful.

It's great, but doesn't necessarily feel like it adds enough value over using CoPilot, ChatGPT, or whichever generative AI tool your business already uses. Time will tell if this model continues to be developed, and whether it remains competitive with the other big models out in the industry, and innovating features and integrating more use cases fast.

I use all three at present, Perplexity IS outstanding when It comes to researching, like a search engine on steroids. If you need programming skills Claude or Chatgpt seem better suited for the task. What I normally do in a project IS use all three in order to arrive at a more insightful outcome. The BEST of all world.

We selected Pinecone because they had much more startup-friendly pricing.

• When our product had a primitive search, we were lambasted by users, and we embraced Pinecone to fill an urgent need for something better. Over the years, it has become a wired-in foundation for more than a few product features.
• The money we didn't spend creating and maintaining something "like" Pinecone has been one of our best investments.
