What is ARIS?

ARIS Platform (Architecture of Integrated Information Systems) is an enterprise business process management (BPM), process mining, and process intelligence platform developed by ARIS (formerly a division of Software AG). ARIS enables enterprise organizations to document, analyze, simulate, and optimize business processes, establishing a digital twin of the organization (DTO) to support operational transformation, governance, risk management, and enterprise artificial intelligence (AI) agent deployments.

Corporate History & Standalone Carve-Out

Originally created by Prof. August-Wilhelm Scheer and developed by IDS Scheer AG, ARIS was acquired by Software AG in 2009 for approximately €487 million. Following the 2023 acquisition of Software AG by private equity firm Silver Lake, Software AG underwent a comprehensive corporate restructuring. Software AG divested webMethods and StreamSets to IBM in 2024, alongside sales of Alfabet, Cumulocity, and TrendMiner.

On January 7, 2025, Software GmbH (Software AG's holding company) officially announced that ARIS launched as a standalone, independent company operating under its own dedicated executive management team at aris.com, backed by Silver Lake. Legal carve-out workstreams established independent operating NewCo entities across more than 20 global jurisdictions (such as SAG ARIS GmbH in Saarbrücken, Germany and ARIS Software Spain S.L.U. in Madrid).

Core Capabilities & Enterprise AI Process Context

The ARIS Platform integrates process modeling, operational analytics, and process governance into a unified suite:

  • Process Modeling & Digital Twin: Captures and maps end-to-end organizational workflows, business architectures, roles, systems, and decision rules to construct a digital twin of the organization (DTO).
  • ARIS Process Mining (Process Lens): Extracts event logs from enterprise systems (such as SAP, Salesforce, and ServiceNow) to visualize actual execution paths, identify operational bottlenecks, and measure process performance.
  • Process Simulation & Scenario Testing: Tests process changes, evaluates resource allocations, and quantifies expected operational returns prior to live deployment.
  • Agentic AI Process Context & Guardrails: Evaluates and scores business processes for AI readiness, giving autonomous AI agents operational context, execution rules, and escalation parameters to prevent agent drift.
  • Governance, Risk, & Compliance (GRC): Embeds risk controls, policy attestations, and regulatory compliance frameworks directly into business process models.
