AWS Storage Gateway Fit for business.

Rating: 8 out of 10

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

AWS Storage Gateway has been a great solution for syncing our local storage with the cloud. We keep all our sales decks, facility layouts, and equipment schematics locally for quick access, while everything is automatically stored in an S3 bucket for backup and easy sharing.

Pros

  • Syncing
  • Backups
  • High availability

Cons

  • Setup
  • Pricing
  • Customization

Likelihood to Recommend

AWS Storage Gateway is perfect for teams that need fast local access to files while keeping everything securely backed up in the cloud. For us, it means our sales decks, facility layouts, and equipment schematics are always easy to find and safely stored in S3. It’s less ideal for fully cloud-native setups where local storage isn’t needed.

AWS Storage Gateway another solid service provided by AWS

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We leverage AWS Storage Gateway to mount an S3 bucket to a database server as a share to provide the ability for native backups to AWS. DBA's prefer native backups to a 3rd party tool; this protects them if the company switched backup providers it would not affect their backups or restores with it being consistent leveraging the native tools.

Pros

  • Connects on-premises applications to AWS cloud storage (S3, EBS).
  • Great option for backups, archiving & disaster recovery.
  • Data is encrypted in transit and at rest.

Cons

  • Limited protocol support currently only supports NFS & SMB.
  • Dependent on AWS ecosystem.
  • Costs can add up, while storage is cheap data transfer and retrieval fees can increase costs.

Likelihood to Recommend

excellent use cases for AWS Storage Gateway would include backups, archiving, Data migration as well as disaster recovery. some use cases to avoid high performance-based workloads requiring low latency or high IOPs. any use cases that are not SMB or NFS based protocols. cost sensitivity data transfers and retrieval fees can add up quickly with S3 glacier.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

Have various storages, so to manage all of them, deploy AWS Storage Gateway to solve your problem in management

Pros

  • Backup the data in cloud becomes easier
  • Reduce latency
  • Easily scalable

Cons

  • More ACE support
  • Make an offline notification
  • Population of the data metrics

Likelihood to Recommend

Backing up data has become quite easy with AWS Storage Gateway. But in the case of notifications, it needs to improve.

Success with AWS Storage Gateway

Rating: 8 out of 10

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We use SG to take in all sorts of information from trusted and public sources. SG allows us to have a single ping of entry rather than supporting multiple services. This has really simplified our process and allowed us to focus on other more important issues within our organization.

Pros

  • Easy to deploy: Setting the solution up took much less time than anticipated.
  • AWS management Console facilitates monitoring: This allowed us to ditch a home baked solution in lieu this great tool!
  • Secure data transfer: Easily passing our company audits and standards for security.
  • VM integration

Cons

  • Expensive Gateway pricing: This can be pricy but worth in the long run.

Likelihood to Recommend

SG is well suited for complete cloud overhauls and moving backups. Due to the low latency access, your data is always at your fingertips.

AWS Storage Gateway - Efficient way to connect to multiple AWS Storage services

Rating: 8 out of 10
Incentivized

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We use s3 for storing backups of our on-prem databases and the AWS Storage gateway acts as a middleware connecting s3 from on-prem servers.

Pros

  • Good set of endpoints like s3, glacier etc.
  • Latency is low
  • Secure way to connect to the storage

Cons

  • Tough API, could be simplified
  • Does not route based on logic
  • Could not use tags

Likelihood to Recommend

It is well suited for our backups. We store backups in 2 places EBS volumes in VPC and s3 buckets. From our on-prem servers, we connect to both and backup job runs smooth. It is less appropriate if you are already hosting in the AWS Cloud. There are direct ways to access storage areas without the need for gateway.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

I use AWS Storage Gateway for accessing different storage services like S3. We use Amazon S3, Amazon Glacier, Amazon EBS volume, and AWS Backup services extensively in my current organization.

Pros

  • Manages security quite well.
  • Make easy for accessing Amazon Cloud Storage.
  • Well Documented and easy to configure.

Cons

  • Logging can be improved on failure.

Likelihood to Recommend

If we want to access Amazon services like S3 in a more secure way, we can implement AWS Storage Gateway. We have implemented AWS Storage Gateway for accessing all our S3 bucket objects.

Amazon Web Services (AWS) is the largest cloud infrastructure, provider. We tried their Generous Free-Tier for one year. For a small business like ourselves, this is a huge deal in moving to AWS from other cloud providers, as I can try out most of its services before upgrading to premium specifications. Plus, their customer support is good.

Pros

  • Support
  • One-stop destination.
  • Ease of Use.

Cons

  • Huge service offerings.
  • Prices
  • Training and Use of the platform.

Likelihood to Recommend

Even though in the web3 space, we should not fully trust any servers or storage due to security but Amazon provides a great level of security and data privacy which is harder to implement on our own. I like the fact that the process of setting it up is fast compared to the others.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We have used AWS Storage Gateway for over a few years now. AWS Storage Gateway offers an user friendly way to access stored data and files from our servers (cloud) and also has very easy linking access. This solution allows us to back up our data and restore data when needed. My overview, AWS Storage Gateway offers very secure storage for confidential.

Pros

  • Uploading files is easy.
  • Efficient Data management
  • The documentation AWS Storage Gateway provides is very user friendly
  • Secure storage

Cons

  • Lag time can sometimes take longer than expected.
  • The initial set up / configuration wasn't easy for our team to implement.

Likelihood to Recommend

AWS Storage Gateway performed better than other Data Center Backup solutions we've used in the past because it's cloud based. The initial documentation AWS Storage Gateway provides is very very user friendly, allowing us to set up the AWS Storage Gateway the right way from the start. It did take a few hours to set up but it helps us store sensitive files pretty easily.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

Once we started migrating our service to the cloud, one of the main concerns was the connectivity to storage in AWS Storage Gateway. With AWS Storage Gateway, we were able to easily connect our on-prem storage appliance to the storage solution in the cloud. The caching feature which the storage gateway supports helps us to get frequently accessed data with minimal latency.

Pros

  • Helps keep all data storage in one place which secure and highly available.
  • Low cost solution.
  • Highly secure.

Cons

  • I would suggest make it more user friendly.

Likelihood to Recommend

It is very well suited for storing secure content in AWS Storage Gateway for the on-prem environments to access. It works very well in a hybrid environment. Not supported connection to multiple buckets.

AWS Storage Gateway, providing a cloud extension of to your backup capabilities

Rating: 8 out of 10

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We used the AWS Storage Geteway as a virtual tape library to enhance the capacity of our backup environment. The business problem that the product addressed was, it gave us the ability to backup additional servers as we had grown exponentially the last few years. With it we were able to backup important dev and QA systems without impacting the retention policy for our production system.

Pros

  • The AWS Storage Gateway can be deployed very quickly. We required only a couple of hours to get it setup and was able to present it to the backup server as a media manager and VTL drives.
  • The provisioning of the virtual tapes was also pretty easy to setup. Being able to utilize Glazier storage provided a great ROI.
  • The documentation AWS provides is very user friendly, allowing us to set up the AWS Storage Gateway the correct way.

Cons

  • There was a limitation on the throughput you were able to push thru the AWS Gateway, increasing the backup time negatively impacting the performance of the system being backed up.
  • The inability to have de-duplication required more bandwidth that's what we anticipated decreasing the ROI. The increased egress charges were less than desired.
  • It was somewhat cumbersome when ejecting and retrieving back the virtual tapes. The process and documentation explaining how that piece of the AWS Gateway could have been more clearer.

Likelihood to Recommend

The AWS Storage Gateway is well suited if you want a quick way to off load your backups to the cloud to eliminate the need of a offsite storage location for physical tapes. The ROI is quite good from that perspective since you can utilize Glacier storage for the virtual tapes. The AWS Storage Gateway is not well suited if data sets being backed up is very large. The lack of de-duplication will add time to your backup. It will also increase the egress charges.
