Overall Satisfaction with AWS Storage Gateway

We leverage AWS Storage Gateway to mount an S3 bucket to a database server as a share to provide the ability for native backups to AWS. DBA's prefer native backups to a 3rd party tool; this protects them if the company switched backup providers it would not affect their backups or restores with it being consistent leveraging the native tools.

Pros

  • Connects on-premises applications to AWS cloud storage (S3, EBS).
  • Great option for backups, archiving & disaster recovery.
  • Data is encrypted in transit and at rest.

Cons

  • Limited protocol support currently only supports NFS & SMB.
  • Dependent on AWS ecosystem.
  • Costs can add up, while storage is cheap data transfer and retrieval fees can increase costs.
  • lower maintenance costs AWS managed service.
  • improved database backups allowing use of native utilities.
  • scalability, easily scales up or down based on demand.
AWS Storage Gateway is a good product and for certain use cases works really well, however i would like to see it support additional protocols in the future.
