Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We decided to fully adopt Cisco Meraki SD-WAN early this year, deploying it across three divisional offices, our headquarter, and over 40 remote locations. Previously, we used various networking products at different sites, which created significant management challenges and site reliability issues—particularly with site-to-site VPN tunnels involving VLANs. We also struggled with centralizing firewall rules and configurations for streamlined deployment at new sites, which is essential for our business operations.

Starlink integration - it would be nice if Cisco Meraki SD-WAN can integrate some of starlinks statuses into its dashboard.

We use Cisco Meraki SD-WAN to enable higher availability, performance based routing and decentralized internet using complimentary products such as Cisoc Secure Access by locally routing internet traffic outside the AutoVPN services

Active WAN ports. currently limited to 2 plus 1 backup
duplication of traffic over multiple AutoVPN tunnels
more granular data via the dashhboard

Currently SME environments and where connectivity is required with limited local resources. For locations where small footprints are required. Where non IT personnel are available. where the local network can benefit from clean easy to install equipment where auto healing I.e having intelligent equipment is key to success and survivabiity

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

Easy to deploy, Zero Touch Provisioning for real, Easy to manage, great visibility. I am a network architect and I can see the pre and post sales of the solutions, I can see the benefit in use cases like Retail and multi branch/site reality. It can reduce the cost of expensive connectivity like MPLS, in many cases an MPLS line is not needed considering the huge improvements that the internet connections reached.

Cons

On the logs visibility, for example to understand which security policies are matched
playing around with the nat on overlay tunnels
Cisco SASE solution is not very well integrated

<div>Meraki SD-WAN fits very well in Retail scenarios, where the setup can be well templated and there are not too complicated configurations (that generally speaking is always recommended regardless Meraki).</div><div>It's not very well recommended when the deployment must be performed in a enterprise where for example It can't be avoided overlapping networks, or there are several third party firewalls which must be connected to the SD-WAN.</div>

Failover alerts that tell IT that there is a carrier down or system issue.
Immediate programing of firewall rules.

An area where it is well-suited would be geographically remote locations with internet access or companies that require scheduled times to enter the premises. Less suitable locations that require internal firewall rules but no access to the outside world.

I guess simplicity of setup and simplicity of making changes is a good thing, but by and large we've migrated away from it.

Reliability. We would have tunnels just drop for no reason and we'd have to switch between head ends to make it work again and then for no reason it would just start working again.

I think it's appropriate for smaller organizations that have fewer than 30 sites. I think if you have more than that, it's probably not appropriate.

Our business contains of many branches with up to 10 users. Meraki solutions perfectly fit. Product are intuitive to use and remote hands could be provided by our non-IT colleagues from the branches. Cisco Meraki SD-WAN addresses a need for a simple deployment on a large scale that is centrally managed. The platform is easy to drive and integrate due to rich API. Documentation is good and easy to navigate.
