Robust Resilient and Rich in Features

Rating: 10 out of 10
Incentivized

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We are using it to create high bandwidth and feature rich network. It offers a variety of core and service features. It uses a custom silicon which is optimized for those features and while still delivering the lightning fast throughput.

Pros

  • They are updated with the latest networking tools
  • They have the most optimized forwarding
  • They have a secure control-plane and management-plane

Cons

  • The CLI could definitely use an uplift, everyone is comfortable with the separation of IOS-XE and IOS-XR. A next gen OS should have a CLI and output better suited to the name. Still carrying the legacy CLI from IOS, not good. At least the outputs should be better organized in a table or another format, easy to eyes.
  • There should be an easy way to capture traffic sample on any of the port, core or access, based on various levels of filter. Basically, a small and limited feature NAM (Network Analyzer Module) equivalent feature built into the RP/LC.
  • Similarly, there should be a limited, traffic generator built into the hardware to simulate application traffic transiting the node for troubleshooting and debuuging

Likelihood to Recommend

The ASR9k is one of the most robust hardware in the market.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

Cisco ASR 9000 Are used mainly for IPMPLS core (PE Function) deployment at our utilities and service providers costumers. . Mainly packet switching and MPLS function. Perfect performance so far, despite being in the market for a long time, it is a trustfully platform.

Pros

  • Mature
  • Low failure rate

Cons

  • Keep up with service provider demands on Cisco 8000

Likelihood to Recommend

We have been working with Cisco Routers for more than 20 years, and they have been perfect platforms. However, new NCS platform is difficult to place at our utilities customer, because they don't have legacy interfaces anymore and most models are not IEC61850 compliant. Plus, Cisco has too many different management platforms.
