Use Cases and Deployment Scope

we are very software development focused company and thus we need a git wrapper for ease of use, pipelines, jobs etc. the scope is pretty wide. even though we are using free self hosted GitLab, it seems that we have managed to use as many features as possible

Pros

  • user friendly UI
  • generous features in free tier
  • ability to self hist

Cons

  • many colleagues would prefer GitHub, but it may be just a preference
  • some QOL features for example merge train are paywalled
  • no desktop app

Return on Investment

  • it let's a 40+ developers team work fluently
  • very easy to enroll new developers since it's quite intuitive
  • higher ups can easily use it to track progress too

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

I am leading the development team for maintaining our main marketing website, vertiv.com. We are using GitLab as our code repository and our pipeline for deployment. Our whole company uses GitLab, and ours is just one repository. It solves the problem of us having a single source of code that is secured and safe.

Pros

  • Security for our codebase
  • Configuring pipeline is easy to implement
  • No issues with using it so far for thr past 5years

Cons

  • From the early years of using it we are having issues connecting the pipeline to azure web services
  • A AI chatbot could help for quick question navigating the interface
  • Maybe a ticketing system would help for user access request rather than creating a merge request

Return on Investment

  • For the past 5yrs we are still using GitLab so it means that we are utilizing it to it's maximum potential
  • Pipeline saves us time for manual deployments and saving time is saving money for the development team
  • Ir serves it's purpose quite well, it's reliable we never experienced downtime

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We use GitLab for source control of our different programs. This allows us to track file changes and if some code ends up lost due to a mistake when checking in code we're able to go find the missing code and get it back in rather than rewriting it all.

Pros

  • Source Control - easy to track changes and view the modified code
  • Merge Requests - easy to set up merge requests in the web portal and check the status of them
  • Support - A+ support every time we've had to use it

Cons

  • If something happens to you geo instance it can be a pain to figure out what part went wrong to isolate it to fix. It ends up with running through the setup guide again

Return on Investment

  • We had some user error with git commands that resulted in lost code but with GitLab we were able to isolate what was lost and get the code back in much quicker than if we had to do it all from the ground up again
  • The Geo feature has been great for when we have to take our one site down for safety if a hurricane is approaching

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We use GitLab as our centralized repository to manage source code for our engineering projects. Our team stores python, SQL scripts and pipeline configurations files in GitLab so everyone can work on the latest version of code. We create branches for new development and review changes through merge requests and maintain a complete history of code changes. GitLab helps in avoiding version conflicts, makes collaboration easy across teams. It has become an important part of our daily development workflow

Pros

  • Version control :-- GitLab makes it easy to track script changes and restore older versions when needed.
  • Access Control :-- Project repository permissions managing helps only authorized team members to modify and access code.
  • Branches and Merge :-- Does well in providing feature branch-based development and reviews before merging it to dev/main.

Cons

  • I don't have any points that has room for improvement. As for as a daily user i'm good with the features and functionalities GitLab offers.

Return on Investment

  • Developer productivity:-- A engineer need not to worry about versioning or CICD build and can only focus on creating development branches and merging with production repos.
  • Features such as Merge, Code review and Approvals help identify issues earlier during the development process. This helps in improved code quality and reduce code rework

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We have been GitLab users since V8. The main usage we have used it's being code versioning linked to issues for our features and CS issues. Since we where self hosting and our budget was small most of our integrations where self made using webhooks and API integration with 3rd parties.

IaC via CI/CD and Validations with Units Tests.

  • CS integration of HTMl Content into readable format

  • Positive of version control on ERP not nativel
  • Positive to create our own integrations via webhooks
