Use Cases and Deployment Scope

I use Google Authenticator every single day. Each morning, I log into my work system with a username and password, but I can not access my important accounts like email, Salesforce CRM, JIRA, Workday, etc. until I have logged in with Google Authenticator. The product addresses security as we work with sensitive client data. Ensuring that employees of my company have only the necessary access is crucial.

Pros

Ease of access when using the app.
Timeliness of providing a code.
Allows for multiple accounts.

Cons

I wish there were a way to access the code outside the app.
I wish I had more accounts to use it on.
I wish I could send a Bluetooth signal instead of typing in a code.

Likelihood to Recommend

Logging into my work accounts is where Google Authenticator works best. Also, I had a personal account get hacked. I had an account created to book hotels, but someone was constantly resetting my password. To prevent further hacking attempts, I set up Google Authenticator. I do not believe it would be appropriate for banking accounts.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

I utilize Google Authenticator for storing all of my multi-factor authentication keys for several district-related logins that I manage for our organization. It's incredibly simple to use, and doesn't take up much storage space on my phone. New keys generate every 15 seconds in the app, and you can password protect the app itself for an additional layer of security.

Pros

Allows QR codes to be scanned for importing new MFA accounts within the app
Allows you to manually enter a setup key for importing new MFA accounts within the app
Allows a "privacy mode" so that only your phone code or biometrics/fingerprint can open the app
Universally works with all MFA accounts that are not proprietary in nature (like Watchguard Authpoint)
Free to use!

Cons

I wish you could change the duration of time each key is available for.

Likelihood to Recommend

This app can literally function in any setting - because it is so simple and free! It's available in the Google Play Store as well as the Apple App Store. I have not heard of any instances of Google Authenticator being compromised, so that is also a plus.

Our company is doing some of the legwork to get some of our accounts set up with two factor authentication and make them more secure for our employees. Google Authenticator is at the top of our list as an option to get this done in the most seamless way.

Pros

Great user interface upon login.
Adding accounts is simple.
Love the QR code feature.

Cons

The way it's set up you always need your phone on you.
Lose your phone and you won't be able to get your authenticator account info back.

Likelihood to Recommend

It's a very simple idea and it's executed well. It's easy to add accounts and once you get it set up and use it you'll be surprised how much you rely on it. Authenticator is available for iOS and android, so any and all of your employees should be able to use it with little setup and little training needed.

We use Google Authenticator for several programs in our tech department. It helps prevent unauthorized access to our Google admin portal as well as our remote software. It's a great software and easy and to use and gives us confidence that our accounts will not be hacked from someone outside our department.

Takes time to log in.

We use Google Authenticator across the university - we are Google based platform - so it helps us to ensure we have only those authorized to be part of the university in our network. It helps to ensure that those who are logging in and using our infrastructure should be there. We have been able to us this to identify potential threats to our system with someone misusing our network.

Pros

One strength is in how it checks identity to stop unwanted people from getting access.
Another strength is in cutting down on the frustration of users for the authentication process.
With the pandemic and needing to work away from the office it also provided additional security in keeping our network/infrastructure safe.

Cons

One thing that would help would be more information pertaining to changing of passwords. Sometimes those passwords and the requirements are not always known or remembered from time to time.
Sometimes its frustrating to have to constantly acknowledge that you have signed in from another device or computer - which comes with the territory in our day and age - but maybe making it more user friendly to understand how to remember a device that you will use more than once.

Likelihood to Recommend

It works well in the university or educational setting because you constantly have new people coming into the realm whether they are students or faculty. So it seems to be well suited for this type of business. I also have my own business and have suggested this for a client who has less employees, but still needs to maintain security. I think it works in many different applications, but it depends on the platforms the business has decided to go with. Using Google Authenticator works well in our organization and it works in several of my clients' businesses too.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

I use Google Authenticator to securely log into my accounts using two-factor authentication. My company consists of just myself. I love Google Authenticator because it is incredibly easy to set up and use. I have 5 different G Suite accounts and numerous social media accounts; I use two-factor authentication on all of them. Having Google Authenticator on my phone makes it incredibly easy to log in wherever I am. After using Google Authenticator for more than five years, I have not had one of my accounts hacked. I always have my phone with me, so there is not an extra device or fob to carry. I recommend wholeheartedly it to anyone who uses two-factor authentication.

Pros

Ease of use. Simply open the app and codes are there for all my two-factor protected accounts.
Having Google Authenticator as an app on my phone makes it really accessible.
Easy set-up. I had the app up and running within 5 minutes.

Cons

I have not come across any areas that need improvement for my use case.

Likelihood to Recommend

When I log in to my personal account at school, I can log in securely and quickly. It also works when I log in to Facebook or another Google account. The only time I have had problems was when I misplaced my phone. I spent the day out of contact. However, this would be a problem for any device that I have to carry even if it is on my keychain or a lanyard.
