Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We are using Google Cloud SQL (PostgreSQL) database as the operational store. Together with Django we have developed a multi tenant solution. The database service helps us avoid operational overhead. It enables us to vertically scale the database service as we add more features and the number of application users increases over time.

Pros

It reduces operational overhead
It is easy to vertically scale
It is integrated with Google cloud logging and monitoring for troubleshooting

Cons

The cost of the service can be reduced so that it is affordable (for startups).
Developers need to use an Google Cloud SQL auth proxy to connect from their personal machines which is an overhead.
A third party tool needs to be used to run SQL queries and visualisation of database relationships. There is no tool provided or recommended by Google for developers.

Likelihood to Recommend

Google Cloud SQL is ideal when most of your solution components are using services of the Google Cloud Platform and you are working in a startup or small company where there are no operations engineers and you want to use a fully managed database service so as to avoid operational overhead.

DigitalOcean Managed Databases

DigitalOcean managed database is relatively less costly compared to Google Cloud SQL database.

Google Cloud SQL service is well integrated with other Google Cloud Platform services such as IAM which enables fine grain access to team members.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We use Google Cloud SQL to run 2 postgresql databases that store all our user data as well as core business data. Using Google Cloud SQL allows us to easily run postgres instances without having to worry about managing the underlying infrastructure much. We are a small team and cant afford to waste time managing our db infra.

Pros

Enables easy scaling of instances
Clear insight into vital metrics showing database health
Super easy backups and restore

Cons

Limited horizontal scaling
Some UI annoyances with the query insights feature
Installing custom extensions isn't supported

Likelihood to Recommend

I would say its very well suited for when you need to run anything from a small to large single instance postgres database and don't want to have to worry about the underlying infrastructure or you don't need any very specific needs (such as needing a custom extension - as that isn't supported). I think most use cases would be well served unless you were a massive company needing something really fancy.

Alternatives

Supabase

I've used supabase and can say that Google Cloud SQL is a lot more hands off. They just run an instance for you and don't do much more than that. Which is exactly what we wanted. If you want something that is truly fully managed and abstracted then I guess that would be a better option. I would advise Google Cloud SQL if you want more control though.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

Google Cloud SQL acts as a relational database for our use case. We needed to keep the website users data with the transactions they had done for subscriptions and keeping the history of the activites done by the user

Pros

Scaling when having peak traffic during campaigns
Leverage the different flavours of DBs
Monitoring the sql queries ran on the db

Cons

If a DB instance is created using private connections, this cannot be modified. This creates a issue when testing
Way to get the username and password after instance creation
Accessing the sql instance through private vpc connection can be made more clear

Likelihood to Recommend

Suited for running sql queries for getting response from db. Suited for transactions. ACID properties are preserved.
Not suited for horizontal scalable use cases

Alternatives

Amazon Relational Database Service (RDS), Google Cloud Spanner and Google BigQuery

Kind of similar features provided against RDS. Used this because of transactional db

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

Our clients need a database solution for their e-commerce tools. They usually used a dedicated virtual machine with a traditional DBMS, but this would cost too much to maintain. Using a cloud solution like Google Cloud SQL would be a better solution in this case, avoiding unnecessary infrastructure maintenance costs.

Pros

Very stable.
Very secure.
Easy to use.

Cons

Cost can get high really quickly.
Log access could be better.
Sharing access with team member not so easy.

Likelihood to Recommend

In our experience, Google Cloud SQL is useful for applications that need a relational database but are not very intensive in data processing and/or don't have heavy loads of data write and read. In these scenarios, it proves to be less expensive and easier to maintain than a traditional DBMS. On the other hand, for really database-intensive applications, it can become too costly and too complicated to maintain.

Alternatives

Google's solution for database is, at least for our team, easier to implement and maintain than Amazon's offer.

Basically I use Google Cloud SQL for test my queries and check whether it's not performing well or takes time. Because Google Cloud SQL comes with the capabilities such as cloud storage, strong backend and fast quieres compilation features that's make it a best and suitable tool. If I talk about my use cases then I will majorly work it on to test my quieres, create tables, make connection with my other tools and erp system to fullfill my database management requirements. Generally when I didn't have Google Cloud SQL then I have to run my test cases on local server but after this I can easily do my work.

Pros

It has a easily and user understandable interface which provides it every necessary feature to come up with.
It's backend is very strong that can help us to run big quieres without any hesitation.
It's integration with other tools are one of the powerful feature which makes it more suitable to use.

Cons

So first all, it need to works more on the security feature.
The table accessible part is a bit confusing so, it can be optimize.
The data integration feature can be done for different erp system.

Likelihood to Recommend

Basically I used it for my test cases, it works very well when you write quieres and run it. It's backend is very fast which gives you more command on the tool. You can optimise your code in a great manner by testing it with this tools. I didn't explore its integration part so it can be a less appropriate side of it.

As I used Google Cloud SQL it's performance is very good and it's ui ux is as per the user demand. Apart from it the backend is very strong which makes it more usable tools as it gives or run the query in very minimal time. Yes there has to be some work on security and integration part.

We use Google Cloud SQL as our primary database and use it to run SQL queries on our data...it is fairly easy to use if you have a basic understanding of SQL. It has helped us automate a lot of our reporting processes and has helped us optimize our team effectively.

Google Cloud SQL is the managed database solution in GCP. Google Cloud SQL usage is extensive in our organization and almost all applications using flavours of postgres sql and MySQL use Google Cloud SQL. Google Cloud SQL is our primary database of choice on migrating applications to Google cloud and its generally our main backup db as well. Its single biggest strength is flexiblity with the databse being useful both as a prototyping solution and a production solutions

Migration
The Database Migration Service has excellent throughput and supports virtually unlimited amount of data.
Insights
The Cloud Insights dashboard is a great place to analyse query performance and resolve database performance issues through pre-built dashboards.
Excellent Dialects
Google Cloud SQL supports a lot of open-source dialects including MySQL, PostgreSQL and SQL server

Cons

No access to the databases logs
System stored procedures are not accessible
Data is not automatically encrypted in transit though Google does AES encryption at rest

Likelihood to Recommend

Google Cloud SQL is a great primary database. It is certainly the first choice that any application developer should try while starting out with GCP. Unless there's an ultra-specific reason Google Cloud SQL should be choice for managed SQL databases.
Google Cloud SQL is not a proper choice for application which needs high or near real-time performance. Its not a good choice for distributed database applications either

Google BigQuery and Google Cloud Spanner

BigQuery is a great analytical database and is generally our first choice for large analytical workloads. While its performance and throughput far outperforms Google Cloud SQL but it supports a far limited dialets of SQL. Generally a significant rewrite will be needed for BgQuery but rarely for Google Cloud SQL
Cloud Spanner is a great distributed database that is amazing for ultra large workloads, while Google Cloud SQL does not support distributed compute at all

Google Cloud SQL was mainly used to create interesting websites for many customers, who are middle-scale companies and individuals. We also used Cloud SQL products to create and manage virtual machines that can be used for training purposes for interns and newcomers so they can try out our developments.

Pros

Providing Free trial of 300 dollars.
Better monitoring capabilities and troubleshooting features.
Easier to set up an instance.

Cons

Lag of releasing the new open-source database systems for Google Cloud SQL.
Not much efficient and advanced billing cycle system.
Not having much rich database visualization / dashboards.

Likelihood to Recommend

Although Google Cloud SQL has room for improvement by addressing a minor lack of features, its features and services keep it high among other SQL database products. It is very fast compared to others. Since it is cloud-based, maintenance is also easier. Integration capabilities are also more than expected.

Unlike other products, Google Cloud SQL has very flexible features that allow it to be selected for a free trial account so that the product can be analyzed and tested before purchasing it.
