Overall Satisfaction with Google Cloud SQL

Our clients need a database solution for their e-commerce tools. They usually used a dedicated virtual machine with a traditional DBMS, but this would cost too much to maintain. Using a cloud solution like Google Cloud SQL would be a better solution in this case, avoiding unnecessary infrastructure maintenance costs.

Pros

  • Very stable.
  • Very secure.
  • Easy to use.

Cons

  • Cost can get high really quickly.
  • Log access could be better.
  • Sharing access with team member not so easy.
  • Reduced in at least 50% the time required to maintain the databases.
  • Reduced complexity of backups.
  • Reduced total cost of operation for not-database intensive applications.
As with other cloud tools, users must learn a new terminology to navigate the various tools and configurations, and understand Google Cloud's configuration structure to perform even the most basic operations. So the learning curve is quite steep, but after a few months, it gets easier to maintain.
We are using Google Cloud SQL exclusively with traditional applications hosted on standard virtual machines. Its integration is straightforward for this purpose: we set all necessary permissions and utilize it as a conventional DBMS.
Google's solution for database is, at least for our team, easier to implement and maintain than Amazon's offer.

Amazon Relational Database Service (RDS), Google Maps API, MobaXTerm, Termius
In our experience, Google Cloud SQL is useful for applications that need a relational database but are not very intensive in data processing and/or don't have heavy loads of data write and read. In these scenarios, it proves to be less expensive and easier to maintain than a traditional DBMS. On the other hand, for really database-intensive applications, it can become too costly and too complicated to maintain.
