Use Cases and Deployment Scope

I currently use Handshake to post summer internship positions for students at my university. We have about 200 unique positions, with their own descriptions, and all link to an external application. I use this in order to best reach as many students as possible at the university, as well as to easily post the positions for a set duration of time.

Pros

Easy to create posts.
Tracks applications.
Clear preview of how the page will look.

Cons

Ability to ask demographic information of applicants for data purposes.
Personalized links for each posting to share out.

Likelihood to Recommend

Handshake is great if this is the expected website for your organization to use. It can be difficult to share out specific positions, but an administrator has helped me create links in the past in order to do so. However, if you don't already have traffic to the site I could see where that would be a challenge. It works well for multiple team members to organize positions and helps to make it smooth and easy on the back end. Overall it's a very easy-to-use site.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

Handshake allows the college to get information out to students about career fairs, informational events, and mock interviews. It also allows companies to connect with students and post job opportunities. The Office of Career Planning also uses this platform to schedule meeting with students and alumnae.

Pros

Nice design aesthetic.
Good search features/filters.
Provides tips to job seekers.

Cons

Jobs tend to be for recent graduates only.
More content to support alums.

Likelihood to Recommend

The communication between students and the Office of Career Planning is all in one place now. The only negative to this is that it is one more place for students to go for information and one more place that needs integration with our SIS.

Handshake has proven itself on a consistent basis to provide, in one platform, the range of features and tools which effectively serve the broad needs of today's college and university career services operation within a cost-effective package. Handshake provides state-of-the-art processes allowing effective use by students, alumni, and employers, which results in very high usage rates for each of these populations. There are few platforms currently available that can match Handshakes' competitive advantage.

Handshake helps provide a mission to opportunity. They do help students find jobs in an easy, accessible way. We use Handshake across campus to post job opportunities, job fairs, career experiences, internships, etc., for all students. If students are looking for a job in particular, we aim to help provide that resource through Handshake. Handshake solves problems with students looking for jobs by making access to what's available accessible for students to find.

Pros

Accessible to students.
Easy for Educational Providers to post jobs.
Easy to share needs of jobs and skill set.
Cross-campus use is easy and consistent.

Cons

Handshake might be hard to use for students who have never used the service before.
Handshake might be hard to use for education providers who are not the most tech-savvy.
Handshake for work-study positions separate from paid jobs is something that may need to be addressed differently.

Likelihood to Recommend

Handshake is ideal for large institutions wanting to fill numerous student positions. It's also suitable for community partners tied to colleges and universities to not only post jobs but internships and volunteer/service work as well. Handshake is also great for career fairs in a virtual setting, although those events may not appeal to all student constituencies.

We use Handshake to recruit student workers and to connect students to potential jobs after graduation. I have used it as both a student and a recruiter.

Pros

Allows students to upload their resume information
Allows students to set their interests for job openings
Allows recruiters to connect with potential applicants

Cons

The quality of jobs available for graduates is lacking
There should be more information available about the jobs, specifically salary and work modality for every job.
Students do not often seem to use it because of the aforementioned issues.

Likelihood to Recommend

If you are truly looking for an entry-level only position for recent undergraduates, then Handshake can be a useful tool for both parties. If you are using it as a graduate or professional student, who is a career changer or mid-level, then I would not recommend it. It is fine for recruiting student workers.

Our local college uses Handshake for all of their internships and hiring fairs, so we have mostly been using it in order to connect with their students. It is nice to know that the HR at the college is actively keeping up, nobody likes to put job posts out into an empty void but with our partnership we know that our jobs are going to the right candidates.

In our case, we are mostly looking for local interns who would like to word while attending classes. It works well for us because we are right next to our local college and it's easy for the students to make it work. If you don't have a college close by internships will more challenging because of long commutes. We think it's a great solution overall for anyone looking to hire a college grad for full time work.
