IBM Cloudability is used for checking the consumption of AWS Cloud services for different cloud account. From business point of view the main problem we are dealing with is to optimize the Cloud Account infrastructure.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

In My Organization, we leverage IBM Cloudability's various dimensions and granular data to get the curated reports to the business stakeholders and app-owners. we leverage the TBM studio to create the dataset which we have processed internally and the same cost numbers are used to create the org-level Apptio BI based Report which is used by all the app owners to get the costing chargeback related details for the given dimension, application for a given period of time. we also leverage CLDY Apptio BIs visualization capabilities to give the insightful reports to the CIO and higher Management related stakeholders on a monthly/quarterly basis.

Pros

Granularity of the Data in IBM Cloudability to create a curated reports for app owners.
Business dimensions to customize the IBM Cloudability reports which would've been difficult to create by using native tools.
TBM capabilities to let the organization to customize the data rather than just simply having the CSP(Cloud-Service-Provider) based inputs.

Cons

Alerts for EKS version upgrade as per the AWS version release calendars, I've already submitted the IDEA on IBM portal, which is accepted, hoping to see this feature in next release.
Unit Economics based parameters addition and view for the users to review how they're doing on per unit basis will definitely add some value.
Cost Sharing related features I've explored to automate the chargeback process has many blockers. I've discussed this with Tim sweetz my Adhoc, I've already shared the blockers to leverage this cost sharing feature. I would like to see an option to customize the cost sharing apart from just proportional, fix, variable type of cost sharing. there should be an option to exclude/include given line item entry for different types of chargeback as in one of the application will get the support cost allocation but it should not be allocated Management charges. such type of customization will definitely help customers to automate their cost allocations using Apptio CLDY.

IBM Cloudability is well suited for below scenarios: 1. An organization which has a requirement of creating the curated reports for the stakeholders with granularity as low as hourly. 2. An organization which wants to have an alternate Savings Plan/commitment related recommendations which can be referred and trusted rather than blindly trusting the cloud native cloud savings plan/commitment recommendations. 3.creating Apptio BI based visualization for the business stakeholders to get quick insights. According to me as per the current features of Cloudability, scenarios where Cloudability might be less appropriate: 1. An organization which is looking for a tool to automate the Cost sharing/chargeback related process. 2. An organization which is looking for a quick unit economics parameter to understand how they're doing. 3. Rating score for different clouds on the parameters like how the customers is doing in terms of the savings potential and savings relalized, which can be shown to management as a proof of success of FinOps Team/scope for more savings.

Recently, I got an opportunity to review this tool in the India Apptio User Conference. Currently, I'm going through the use cases of this tool and checking if this helps us in any of the use cases. also, I've heard from the speaker that IBM Kubecost will be integrated in the Apptio. I would like to see it integrated in the next release.

We use IBM Cloudability for our AWS Cloud Spend data. We are leveraging the application on a daily basis by now establishing an IT-FinOps Team within the organization. Something that we are trying to accomplish is standardize a single view across all domains of technology.

The current reporting setup is well-suited for tagging, account-wise reports, cost center analysis, and financial views. However, additional features and enhancements could be explored, such as improved optimization capabilities (rightsizing, idle IPs/images/resources), advanced drill-down analysis, and self-service reporting. Improving Coin Dashboard and adding more customizable features would also be beneficial

It provides a clear breakdown of cloud spend across AWS, Azure, GCP, and IBM Cloud and also Easy to see which projects, teams, or services are driving costs and automated recommendations for rightsizing instances, shutting down unused resources and optimizing storage. You can track your cost on cloud it helps us to reduce cost and you can integrate with GitHub pull request and you can track of each package and it support multi cloud as well.

Pros

After implementing Cloudability our cloud billing has become much faster to publish, we have relied on the flexibility provided to assist us with other task such as tag controls, annual license true up, using API to export data to some of our in-house tools and many more.

Cons

After the initial IBM M&A the product updates have been a little bit chaotic (we are waiting on some features previously announced, but not yet delivered e.g. user grouping for access controls), but I am definitely seeing that this is ramping up and I am positive that great further updates will come

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We use IBM Cloudability to analyze and reduce our cloud spend. It allows us to look at a single view for multi cloud data. It helps identify areas that can be rightsized and provides the detailed information required to take action.

Pros

Combines multi cloud spend into on tool
Provides cost savings recommendations with detail
Provides users with specific reporting and the ability to create custom reports

Cons

Some data points are not retained so trend reporting has to be done in another Apptio tool
The Apptio BI integration needs work
The containers have to be manually identified to be included in the reporting

Likelihood to Recommend

Providing savings plan recommendations and reserved instance recommendations. The ability to create multiple views and assign to users allows for easy access to product specific reporting. IBM Cloudablility also provides great insight to saving generated by the team over time. We are able to provide management with detailed reports that highlight the benefit of the tool.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

As head of the FinOps practice, I leverage IBM Cloudability on a daily basis for reporting, trending, optimization actions, and sharing the reporting with the organization. IBM Cloudability being able to provide a combined dashboard view across all three could vendors is a big advantage of the tool vs. having to stitch together various reports from the three cloud vendors, most of which are in different formats and taxonomies.

Easily configurable for custom dashboards and reports with base IBM Cloudability data

Cons

More customizable in the visuals
Use data sets across IBM Cloudability and TBM studio interchangeably (Datalink data can't be used in IBM Cloudability)
Tab level role level security
Exports from visuals with large number of rows fails to download (just gives errors)
TBM studio is a different customization language then IBM Cloudability and wish TBM build upon IBM Cloudability vs having to rebuild IBM Cloudability dashboards and reports into Apptio BI.

Likelihood to Recommend

Large organizations across multiple vendors is a good fit. Smaller companies on single clouds, is a costly tool compared to native tools.
