Use Cases and Deployment Scope

I have tried watsonx for a minimal time but i understand that it would help in developer productivity with code gen and maintaining the code. I personally expect the auto completion of code (IDE does to some extent) but could help in prompting the possible logic that would make the code meaningful. I haven't tried writing unit test with this may be worth trying that sometime soon. Code quality is one of the main aspect which would be worth experimenting with this code assistant.

Pros

  • Auto complete
  • Customisable AI behavior
  • Good for IBM modernisation works

Cons

  • Suggesting human inputs before concluding
  • Might be trailing little bit behind the other competetitors
  • Specific use for IBM centric, could be more generic..

Likelihood to Recommend

- Strong static analysis.

- Enterprise‑grade governance

- Purpose‑built models for modernization

- Integrates with IBM DevOps pipelines

- Teams with low test coverage needing fast uplift

- Regression testing for legacy systems

- Onboarding new developers who need help understanding code behavior

Review based on short term use of IBM watsonx Code Assistant Portfolio

Rating: 8 out of 10

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

It was used in upgrading the version of Java from 11 to 21 in few of the Spring boot applications and custom libraries that were written for internal applications. It doesn't solve business problems exactly as such, it was mostly used for resolving tech debts and improvising existing applications. Since majority of the codebase is having similar tech stack, it has consistent results

Pros

  • Java version update
  • Spring boot applications modernization
  • refactoring some old constructs in code

Cons

  • Better Kotlin support
  • Better performance on large codebases like monolith
  • Custom library understanding

Likelihood to Recommend

It can be majorly used wherever we have standard java (maybe more) applications written in well known frameworks and not too outdated inversion. It doesn't support kotlin that well and is not that versatile. It is not that suitable for custom frameworks built for internal use, general developer productivity like a normal coding agent either

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We are using IBM watsonx Code Assistant Portfolio as a coding assistant in software development projects.

We use the basic features such as automatic code generation, code documentation, translation etc.

We use it in conjunction with other AI coding assistants such as Claude.

Pros

  • Supports pretty much all major coding languages (Python, C, C++ etc.)
  • The code generated is mostly accurate and not deprecated, as it tends to happen with AI generated code
  • The documentation generation feature works well

Cons

  • IDE integration is not always optimal
  • I wish it could it could generate the code of an entire WEB site based on user specifications
  • I with there was a functionality to generate code based on design documents such as Sequence Diagrams, Database Architecture etc.

Likelihood to Recommend

I think the main features work as advertised, so it is a recommendable product overall. However, just like other AI coding assistants, you need an experienced software engineer in your team to verify, edit and integrate the code generated.

This is not something that will replace software engineers, at least in its current form.

IBM watsonx Code Assistant Portfolio for Z - Good Understanding for Mainframe

Rating: 4 out of 10
Incentivized

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We POC'd the product for IBM watsonx Code Assistant Portfolio for Z. The use is for Mainframe understanding and modernization. This was to understand how our mainframe components interact and how we can understand what the dependencies are within our different applications. It also provided visual representations that can document what is happening across our pieces. The last IBM watsonx Code Assistant Portfolio piece was done in VSCode to Transform code.

Pros

  • ADDI - Static Analysis
  • Query-able Data
  • Good integration with IDE (VSCode)

Cons

  • The other UIs of the different phases (Refactor and Transform)
  • The usability of the tool and how it can hook into our existing systems.

Likelihood to Recommend

I would recommend for understanding your Mainframe components not for the GenAI piece involved from just my experience. The explanations were not up to the quality we wanted but its deterministic side provided a lot of value for different members of my team. The visuals would be great. I am not sure where it currently stands.
