What is Linux Mint?

Linux Mint is a free and open source operating system and Linux distribution, presented as an alternative to Microsoft Windows and Apple MacOS as a low cost, lightweight but adequate alternative.

Categories & Use Cases

Every I.T. professional should use and be aware of the strengths of Linux Mint

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

I use Linux Mint for several special use cases. In general, it provides fast, stable, inexpensive solutions to problems that would otherwise need expensive, cumbersome software. I would rather use Linux Mint then start new relationships with vendors that I would then have to manage them and their software while paying a premium.

Pros

  • Effieciency
  • Stability
  • Scripting
  • Low cost solutions

Cons

  • some more User Interfaces - like for services

Most Important Features

  • Ease of use
  • stability
  • flexibility
  • Price

Return on Investment

  • It has saved tens of thousands of dollars just for being our air-gapped backup solution. other software would have been very expensive, and harder to manage
  • Providing simple, easy to use applications (docker, for example) that can quickly, easily, and inexpensively deployed saves many, many hours and dollars

Alternatives Considered

Ubuntu Linux, CentOS Linux and Fedora Linux

Linux Mint - Good OS for Work

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We use Linux Mint to manage Raspberry Pi images for production. We mount the images with the mount tool and then update our software packages.

In addition we use Linux Mint for other SBC development. We install toolchains and cross compilers to test our software in those SBC.

Overall the GUI is pleasant and easy to manage, allowing us to focus more on the problem to solve than to the OS configuration.

We run it in a virtual machine and the performances are good

Pros

  • terminal
  • file management
  • OS and software updates

Cons

  • nothing

Most Important Features

  • free
  • fast
  • easy to use

Return on Investment

  • Being free it has not really a ROI
