In my realm of administration and accounting, I use Microsoft Excel for everything. Our project management software downloads reports into Excel. I made a custom KPI dashboard for individual PM and company-wide statistics. I track our invoices are sent, outstanding AR and when I last followed up with that client. I use pivot tables, conditional formatting, and lookup everyday for my spreadsheets with thousands of rows of data.

Pros

  • This is really niche. But I appreciate how easy it is to "unmerge" an entire spreadsheet with Microsoft Excel. Google Sheets can't do this and it's so tedious. Many of the reports I download from our project management software how unnecessarily merged cells which I clean up before disseminating the report to the executive team or PMs.
  • Chart customization is better on Microsoft Excel than Google sheets.

Cons

  • the lack of checkboxes (not counting the developer tab which doesn't count in my opinion). For my purposes, checkboxes are extremely helpful
  • Microsoft Excel's online version is awful in my opinion. It's been very glitchy; Google Sheets is way better for an online version. Collaboration is essential in business and Excel is just not great for that.

  • My custom PM dashboard is used in annual reviews to show PMs how they're lining up with last year/where they stand this year. It's a tool for PMs & executive leadership to be on the same page for each person
  • We regularly analyze financial data on Microsoft Excel and even present the data to clients to compare / show missing payments
  • I use it to track how I'm doing on collecting the very aged AR for my personal stats for wage negotiation purposes.

My job is to handle data from the Site, validate and integrate the data correctly, and then update the same into a database like Oracle or SAP for further activities.
With the built-in functions and access to VBA, the task is automated, which eases our daily activity, and anyone can do analysis error-free.

  • No issues with version control, sharing in emails or file corruption.
  • Best when paired with Microsoft PowerBI.

Cons

  • VIookup and pivot tables are hard to learn at first, but youtube tutorials easily explain the tool.
  • Creation of Pie charts is glitchy and hard to read even with reformatting
  • best paired with Powerbi for clean data visualizations, charts, maps, etc

I use Excel multiple times a week to keep track of sales, subscriptions, records, and more. The spreadsheets also allow me to keep track of our webinars and seminars by allowing multiple pages at the bottom. This way I can use the same templates and just copy it for every webinar or seminar we do. I also use it to create checklists for customers.
