Microsoft Visual Studio Code

Microsoft offers Visual Studio Code, an open source text editor that supports code editing, debugging, IntelliSense syntax highlighting, and other features.

Users can choose from multiple out of the box models, or bring a key to access models from your preferred model and hosting provider. The codebase is indexed locally and remotely to understand what's relevant, enabling fast, context-aware interactions.

The relatively new Agent Mode adds AI support. It reads the codebase, suggests edits across files, runs terminal commands, and responds to compile or test failures — all in a loop until the job is done. VS Code extensions and Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers can be used to extend agent functionality.

VS Code predicts the coder's next move, and offers AI-powered suggestions right in the editor. It intelligently recommends what to change — and where — based on the edits the developer is already making.
